Richard Mille is setting a new milestone in the history of watchmaking by announcing a brand new watch material named – NTPT carbon, a short for Nort Thin Ply Technology carbon.
The photo above shows a teaser for the upcoming Richard Mille RM 011 Carbon NTPT Automatic, which is the very first wristwatch made from this high-tech material. NTPT Carbon was originally invented to be used for the sails of racing yachts, because of its advantageous properties: lightweights and high level of resistance against corrosion and shocks. Since NTPT has already proved its worth in nautical circles, it became increasingly popular and has been used for Formula 1 car chassis for the last two seasons, and for the fuselage of the forthcoming Solar Impulse 2 flying machine. As you can see, this exclusive material is very interesting for us, not only because of its amazing technical features, but also because it has a very unique appearance.
NTPT carbon is composed of multiple layers of parallel filaments, made by dividing carbon fibers. The surface of the material features regular undulations and reminds of the surface of precious wood. Its physical properties are truly outstanding as NTPT carbon improves the rate of occurrence of breaking stresses by 25% and of micro-cracks by 200%.
There is not much information about the Richard Mille RM 011 carbon NTPT automatic watch at this moment, but we do know that it uses the RMAC1 automatic caliber, a movement made entirely of titanium. The watch is a flyback chronograph with a large date at 12 o’clock, and a month display at 4 o’clock. The watch offers about 55 hours of power reserve, thanks to its double-barrel system wound by a variable geometry rotor.
