In January 2015, on the occasion of the SIHH exhibition, Richard Mille unveiled its new model, the RM 19-02 Tourbillon Fleur, which revisits the centuries old Swiss tradition of creating mimetic mechanical objects.
The new Richard Mille RM 19-02 Tourbillon Fleur is a remarkable and rare watch equipped with an astonishing flower-shaped flying tourbillon. This mechanical masterpiece is actually a breathtaking automaton on which the purple magnolia flower opens every five minutes to reveal a glorious tourbillon.
For the house of Richard Mille, the creation of such an object is like capturing the very essence of life using mechanical means. For this reason, the brand has chosen a special flower, the Magnolia, since it is an ancient genus, dating to over 95 million years ago, even before the emergence of bees. For Richard Mille, the Magnolia symbolizes the endless circle of birth and regeneration, a symbol of resilience and survival even though the most difficult times.
The mechanical Magnolia is located at 7 o’clock position, at the lower left part of the dial on the RM 19-02. Its five delicate petals are made of white gold, and arranged around a flying tourbillon, which is made of grade 5 titanium. The petals were hand-created and -colored by the Manufacture’s most skillful artisans. Every five minutes, or on demand, the petals open and close, while the entire flying tourbillon, with its stone set stamen, moves upwards 1mm. This nature-inspired kinetic wonder exactly mimics the natural motion of the flower that arches upwards to increase its chances of pollination…
To make everything possible, the watchmakers have created a complex mechanism that incorporates the 5 levers attached to the base of the petals. An additional mechanism, with a long pinion, propels the flying tourbillon and its stamen upwards. The systems are powered from a separate winding barrel, but, since it is possible to adjust the opening and closing cycle, the user can manage the power consumption arbitrarily.
Richard Mille RM 19-02 Tourbillon Fleur comes in a massive tripartite tonneau-shaped case set with precious stones. The case measures 45mm x 38mm, and it is water resistant to 50 meters, ensured by two Nitril O-ring seals. The skeletonized baseplate is entirely hand-engraved with a floral pattern, while the exhibition case-back reveals a tiny part of the movement.
Richard Mille RM 19-02 Tourbillon Fleur is available in a limited edition of 30 exemplars. This interesting model is priced at $1.09 million USD.
