Richard Mille is presenting a brand new piece, dedicated to Jean Todt, president of Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) and a former rally co-driver and Chief Executive Officer of Ferrari.
The watch is a Richard Mille RM036 Tourbillon G-Sensor, will be available only in a limited edition, starting from 2013. The RM036 is crafted in titanium, which makes it extremely lightweight and resistant to various kinds of shocks. The case is tonneau shaped and very thick with its 16.15mm profile. On the inside beats the RM036 torubillon movement with fully skeletonized baseplate made from carbon nano-fiber. The bridges are made in titanium, while the central bridge is in rigidified ARCAP, which is an alloy that does not contain iron and so is not magnetic. The spline screws are holding everything on place, ensuring the rigidity of the assembly and high performance in any condition. The tourbillon is also designed to work flawlessly even after major shocks – it features a free sprung variable inertia balance and a fast-rotating barrel with progressive recoil.
What makes this watch unusual is its G-force (gravitational forces) sensor, which is the first one in a Richard Mille creation. The sensor is linked with a green/red indicator, positioned at 12 o’clock, and it shows the influence of G-force on the wearer, and its exact amount. The push-piece positioned at 9 o’clock controls the G-force sensor, and it is used whenever the wearer wishes to reset the meter. This interesting complication, developed by Renaud Papi, is a nod to the world of drag races where top-fuel dragsters can accelerate from zero to 160 kilometers per hour (100 mph) in a little over 0.80 seconds. In an attempt to win the race, the drivers must overcome the laws of nature and beat g-forces, the downward gravitational pull of the Earth. If you ever saw a professional drag race you must remember that at the end of the run each of these racing cars deploys a parachute in order to slow down and stop. The G-force sensor on a wristwatch can come handy since these forces can severely affect drivers. The infamous case of Don Garlits can perhaps best illustrate this: he developed separated retinas in both eyes as a result of deceleration produced by breaking parachutes and negative G-forces of 4g upon deceleration.
Richard Mille RM036 Tourbillon G-Sensor Jean Todt Limited Edition will be officially presented at SIHH exhibition in January 2013. The watch will be available in 15 exemplars and all of the profits from its sale will go to charity.
