RJ-Romain Jerome Día de los Muertos watch
Día de los Muertos is a Mexican holiday celebration that takes place on November 1. Also known as the Day of the Dead, is closely connected with the Catholic holidays of All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day, yet it can be traced back to the ancient pagan cultures. The Day of the Dead is the celebration in honor of those who have departed and at the same time a celebration that glorifies life, happiness and joy. The traditions connected with the holiday go all the way back to the Aztec culture blending with the customs inherited from Spanish colonialists. Aztecs were already practicing the gatherings of family and friends at the graves of their dead, where they used to dance, sing and place various offerings, but the Spanish made the festival coincide with the Christian celebrations on All Saints Day, placing it in November.

Mexican people relate to death not only with mourning but also with happiness and joy. They look at death with fear, as any other culture, but, at the same time, they experience death as a cyclic change that at the same time promotes the life and living. Mexicans laugh at death for the occasion of the Día de los Muertos by placing vividly colored decorations on the graves and the streets of their towns and villages, by dancing to the music, singing, and treating themselves with sweets and liquor.
RJ-Romain Jerome Día de los Muertos watch

The new RJ-Romain Jerome Día de los Muertos is created to honor the most important day in Mexican calendar and officially unveiled on November 1st, 2012. There are two different versions of this watch, and each of them is offered in a limited edition of 25 exemplars. The watches are crafted from stainless steel, which has undergone a special black PVD-coating treatment. The case measures 46mm in diameter and features "Día de los Muertos" medallion engraved on the back. The black ceramic bezel circles around the black mirror-polished dial which reveals a skull applique in champlevé enamel. The skull motif evokes "calaveras de azúcar," which are the sugar skulls which are used as an offering during the entire celebration of the Day of the Dead. The skull applique is painted in seven different colors, reminding of the seven stages through which the soul of the dead person passes before reaching its final peace.
There's no special difference between two variants of RJ-Romain Jerome's Día de los Muertos. The only difference that I can spot is the cross motif featured on one of the skulls. From the inside, both watches look exactly the same - they're powered by the mechanical self-winding movement RJ001-A, which beats at 28.800 vibrations per hour and provides 42 hours of power reseve. The movement is built on 23 jewels and it drives the functions for central hours and minutes.
RJ-Romain Jerome Día de los Muertos is issued under the reference numbers RJ.T.AU.FM.001.01 and RJ.T.AU.FM.001.02. Both series are mounted on the same-looking black hornback alligator straps. The watch is priced at USD 15,900.
