RJ-Romain Jerome presents its much awaited Tattoo DNA collection, which was announced more than a year ago.
RJ- Romain Jerome Tattoo DNA is created in collaboration with Mo Coppoletta, who is one of the world’s most famous tattoo artists. The collection is a tribute to the tattoo art and maritime legends, driving the inspiration from the world of sailors and their traditional customs.
The practice of tattooing in the Western world is associated with Captain James Cook voyages to the South Pacific. It is said that he and his sailors decided to get tattoos as remembrances of their visit to Tahiti. Not long after, tattoo become one of the many things that identify a sailor. Very often, tattoos have been religious images or protective symbols drawn on sailors’ bodies to conciliate the evil powers that may cause storms and drowning.

That’s why sailors often tattooed the weak parts of their body, such as the chest or arms, with various symbols of strength and good luck. For example, the anchor is a symbol of strength, stability and hope, but also a link to Mother Earth. A dagger-through-a-heart tattoo was a symbol of a love relationship, which ended in betrayal or unfaithfulness. The swallow-motif can be traced back to a ship named The Swallow and its seven crew members who refused to obey orders and tried to take control of the ship. It protects the sailors by helping them to find their way home.
However, the anchor motif was not always a positive symbol. Many times it was used to commemorate a lost ship or a member of the crew. The “Sailor’s Grave” motif, depicted on the dial of the RJ-Romain Jerome Tattoo DNA, represents those lost at sea. The large anchor rises above the gloomy backdrop that portrays a sinking ship caught between the stormy clouds and the raging ocean.

Tattoo DNA is available in four different variants, each issued in a 25-piece limited edition. Depending of the version, the watch comes in either steel or black PVD-coated steel, featuring a 50mm case. The dial is beautifully decorated with stamping, engraving and silver decorative appliques. The bolts of lightning are either red or yellow, enhanced with superluminova green emission. The watch is powered by the RJ001-A mechanical self-winding movement, which beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour and provides 42 hours of power reserve.

Depending of the version, RJ-Romain Jerome Tattoo DNA is mounted on either black fabric strap or skin-colored leather strap tattooed by Mo Coppoletta. The model is priced at CHF 16,950. / EUR 15,950. / USD 18,450. / GBP 13,750.
