Here is your first look at Roger Dubuis Excalibur Quatuor Cobalt Micro-Melt, an exciting new timepiece that will be officially unveiled at the upcoming Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH), in January 2017. The latest creation from the famous Swiss manufacturer is a fresh, colorful interpretation of the Excalibur Quatuor, a model that was first introduced to the public in 2013. This is the first and only timepiece fitted with four separate balances combined in two pairs. At the time, the model was announced as a practical alternative to the tourbillon, since its diagonally positioned balances, connected by differentials, improve the overall precision and accuracy of the watch.
So far, the model was introduced in monobloc silicon, DLC-coated titanium, and red gold, but now Roger Dubuis introduces a high-performance cobalt-chrome alloy to the watch industry. The new material, undergoes a special patented process, which Roger Dubuis calls MicroMelt, in which the alloy, kept in a state of vacuum, is melted and refined in an oven. Further on, the alloy is forced through a stream of high-pressure inert gas until it disperses into a pure and homogeneous metal alloy powder. The powder is then separated by particle size and blended before being poured into containers that undergo hot isostatic pressing. This final step reduces porosity and increases density of the material, so it becomes solid, and ready to be machined. Compared to the original alloy, such a material is much harder to machine, but the final product will be stronger, tougher, and more resistant to shocks.
The new Roger Dubuis Excalibur Quatuor Cobalt Micro-Melt features the legendary caliber RD101, which is composed of almost 600 individual parts. Equipped with four sprung balances and five differentials, the movement beats at an amazing frequency of frequency of 16 Hertz (115,200 vph). This complex caliber, built from 590 components and 113 jewels, requires 2,400 hours of manufacturing, including 720 hours devoted to the Poinçon de Genève.
The movement is housed in a large, 48 mm-diameter Cobalt Chrome case, which is no less than 18.38 mm thick. A bold and fresh color scheme features silver-grey case and contrasting blue PVD-coating on the movement, the dial, and hour-markers. A speedometer-styled minute track is decorated with red and white accents, while red-tipped hands feature SuperLuminova highlights. A 40-hour power reserve indicator appears at a 9 o’clock position, while the Poinçon de Genève inscription shows at 6 o’clock.
The new Roger Dubuis Excalibur Quatuor Cobalt Micro-Melt will be available in a limited edition of only 8 pieces. The watch is mounted on a vibrant blue alligator leather strap with contrasting red stitching. The price will be around 390,000 CHF. Rogerdubuis.com.
