Earlier this year, on the occasion of the SIHH 2016 exhibition, Roger Dubuis introduced its Velvet by Massaro collection, which is designed in collaboration with the famous Parisian shoemaker.
The Massaro shoemaking atelier, which is carrying on a family business founded in 1894 by Raymond Massaro, specializes in gilded and pleated leather. Even today, the shoemakers of Massaro use the old pedal-operated sewing machines from the founder’s era.
This year’s Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie in January showcased the first fruit of collaboration between Roger Dubuis and Maison Massaro. Back then, the Velvet by Massaro collection was introduced as a luxury trilogy dedicated to the golden age of Hollywood. The first watch from the series, which debuted at SIHH 2016, is called Rita, and it represents a horological tribute to Rita Hayworth.
Roger Dubuis Velvet by Massaro Rita features a gorgeous gold-colored leather strap, made by Massaro, graced with a twisted torsade running down the whole length. The barrel-shaped central portion of the dial is framed in yellow gold and entirely paved with diamonds. Two applied numerals at, 6 and 12 o’clock position, are also crafted from yellow gold. The case, bezel and lugs are from white gold, set with clear brilliant-cut diamonds.
This summer, Roger Dubuis introduces the second sequel to the Velvet by Massaro trilogy, another 88-piece limited edition timepiece honoring the classic beauties of the 1950’s. This time, Roger Dubuis honors Greta Garbo, with a gorgeous, dark, and a little bit mysterious timepiece. The unique strap is now made of finely brushed black leather and decorated with black feathers interwoven into its middle section. This dark plumage creates a captivating contrast with the pink gold case sparkling with diamonds.
Third and last timepiece from the Velvet by Massaro series is Velvet by Massaro – Lana, a piece dedicated to the famous platinum blonde Lana Turner. The model is distinguished by its Massaro silver strap featuring a row of delicate pearls running down the middle. The watch is crafted from white gold, and it features golden appliques and a brushed barrel-shaped dial center. Same as the other two models, Velvet by Massaro Lana is issued in an 88-piece limited edition.
Roger Dubuis Velvet by Massaro watches are driven by the Roger Dubuis mechanical self-winding movement RD821. Beating at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour, and delivering a 48-hour power reserve, this movement provides indications for hours and minutes. All models are of the same shape and size, measuring 36 mm in diameter. They’re water resistant to 30 meters and stamped with the Poinçon de Genève. Roger Dubuis Velvet by Massaro Rita is priced at 48,600 CHF. For the rest two models, the price is yet to be announced.
