Earlier this year, the house of Speake Marin has introduced a new masterpiece, the one-of-a-kind Black Magister Vertical Double Tourbillon. This unique model, distinguished by its two 60-seconds tourbillons, will be on display during the Watchtime New York exhibition, which is America’s most important luxury watch event. Less than a month away, the event is open to the general public and it takes place on October 14 and 15, 2016.

For Peter Speake-Marin, the famous English watchmaker and founder of the Speake-Marin manufacture, the tourbillon was always the most inspiring of all watch complications. Even the first timepiece produced by the Maison was a hand-made pocket watch equipped with a tourbillon – the Foundation Watch. As Peter Speake-Marin explains, it is not only the tourbillon’s precision that fascinates him, but also the aesthetical aspect of this complication, the animation it gives to the dial and the ability to dynamically illustrate the passing of time.

Speake Marin Black Magister Vertical Double Tourbillon features an assembly of two 60-second tourbillons set against a blackened gilded mainplate. The large, oven-fried enamel subdial, at 3 o’clock position, features hours and minutes display combined with the Maison’s signature Foundation blued hands. Above the counter is the 72-hour power reserve indicator, facilitated by a cam-shaped disc that opens to disclose the mechanism below, and slowly closes and signals empty when a red section of the disc reaches the central marker. Below the counter is a day/night indicator, which makes a nice visual balance with the power reserve.

Two twin tourbillons are vertically aligned on the left side of the dial, while a single massive bridge supports their upper side. Each tourbillon is powered by its own gear train and a mainspring barrel, while both barrels are wound at once via the crown. A miniature limited-slip spring gearbox absorbs and balances any variations between the two cages.

Speake Marin Black Magister Vertical Double Tourbillon is crafted from 18-karat white gold, and its elegantly rounded case measures 46mm in diameter. The case-back is fitted with a sapphire crystal to reveal a black gilded movement with contrasting engraving. The underside of the tourbillons is also open to view, while a small wheel between the openings features "Equilibreur de Marche" engraving. The watch is mounted on a black alligator strap with a pin buckle in white gold. More information at speake-marin.com.
