For BaselWorld 2015, Ulysse Nardin presented a new addition to its Classico Collection, a limited edition Kruzenshtern timepiece with enamel cloisonné dial.
The Kruzenshtern joins the existing range of exquisite timepieces in Ulysse Nardin's Cloisonné collection, which derives inspiration from the Russian four-masted barque and tall ship, which was constructed in 1926 at Geestemünde in Bremerhaven, Germany. The ship, which was originally named Padua, after the city in Italy, was surrendered to the USSR in 1946, as war reparation. The Russians renamed it Kruzenshtern, after the 19th century Baltic German explorer, Adam Johann Kruzenshtern. A legendary windjammer Kruzenshtern celebrated its 85th anniversary in 2011. Throughout its long history, the ship served on many missions, but today she mainly operates as a training vessel.

The famous Kruzenshtern is immortalized on the dial of Ulysse Nardin’s latest timepiece, which accurately portrays her appearance in beautiful cloisonné enamel. The dial is produced using the highly complex decorative technique in which opaque or translucent colors are obtained by mixing silica nitrate and lead oxide, to which metallic oxide is added for coloring. The proportions of all elements, and their particular combinations, are typically kept a secret. The European take on cloisonné enamel features gold wires that are soldered in place, to form the cloisons that hold the colors separate. The colored enamel powder, made into a paste, is then poured into chambers and fired in a kiln to form a final object. To make one of these dials, Ulysse Nardin’s enamelers used more than 500mm of fine golden wire, they conducted 26 different processes, and worked for no less than 50 hours.

The Ulysse Nardin Kruzenshtern timepiece is available in two different versions, handcrafted from either 18-karat rose or white gold. Its round case measures 40mm in diameter, embracing a picturesque scene depicting the Kruzenshtern gliding across the sea, with its white sails blowing in the breeze. This COSC-certified chronometer is powered by the self-winding UN-815 caliber, which provides about 42 hours of power reserve. The open case-back with sapphire crystal reveals the wonder of the movement, and protects it from the ingress of water to up to 50 meters. The watch is mounted on either a leather strap or metallic bracelet.

The Ulysse Nardin Kruzenshtern is limited to 30 pieces. Reference numbers are as follows:
- 8150-111-2/KRUZ for the 18-karat white gold version
- 8156-111-2/KRUZ for the 18-karat rose gold version
