Longines 180th Anniversary Telemeter Chronograph

Marina Milojević | 08.02.12 | 04:26 PM

Longines Telemeter Chronograph is designed in the spirit of timeless elegance and inspired by the vintage chronograph produced by the brand in 1933.

As noted many times before, Longines celebrates the 180th anniversary this year. To mark the occasion, the famous Swiss brand has already introduced many new limited edition anniversary models. The new Telemeter Chronograph and Tachymeter Chronograph are yet another nod to brand’s rich heritage, designed to confirm and express technical excellence and refined aesthetic, typical for Longines.

The distinguishing feature of this model is certainly its telemeter scale printed on the dial, which is another historical motif. Telemeters were first introduced around 1852 and they were used to measure the distance using the speed of sound. This type of chronograph works with any kind of phenomenon that can be seen and heard. For example, telemeter can measure the time between the lighting and a thunder, to show if the storm is approaching and at what distance it occurs.

To use this functionality, the wearer needs to start the chronograph as soon as the visual phenomenon (lighting) appears, and to stop it as soon as the acoustic phenomenon is heard (thunder). Telemeter hand will stop to show the distance measured on telemeter scale, which can be defined in any unit of distance. The new Longines, for example, shows the distance in kilometers – a unit of length in the metric system used in most countries of the world (even though the States and the United Kingdom use statute miles as the official unit).

The classic white dial of Longines 180th Anniversary Telemeter Chronograph looks pretty much complicated but it is, in fact, very easy to read. Thanks to the caliber L688 the watch features a date aperture between 4 and 5 o’clock, a small second indicator at 9 o’clock, a 30-minute counter at 3 o’clock and a 12-hour counter at 6 o’clock. The red print on the inner flange is a telemeter scale, while the central spiral print serves as tachymeter scale. The blued Breguet-style hands are giving this piece a nice vintage appeal, while the black alligator strap completes the elegant composition.
