The house of Longines adds yet another interesting timepiece to its Heritage collection. The new Avigation BigEye chronograph keeps with the great tradition of pilot watches, featuring a design strongly influenced by the 1930’s. The model features aesthetic cues borrowed a number of vintage aviation instruments, even though it is mostly inspired by a particular pilot’s watch that now rests in the Longines Museum.
The round stainless steel case, measuring 41mm in diameter, features a classic domed sapphire crystal coated in multiple layers of anti-reflective treatment. The finely brushed steel embraces the very readable black dial with large, Super-LumiNova-coated Arabic hour markers and oversized rhodium-plated hands. Two oversized push buttons, for controlling the chronograph, are placed on the side of the case, allowing the wearer to handle them even while wearing gloves.
The Longines Avigation BigEye is powered by the L688 column wheel chronograph movement, produced exclusively for Longines. The base movement is ETA A08.L01, which beats at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour offering 54 hours of power reserve. The mechanism drives a running seconds register at 9 o’clock, the twelve-hour counter at 6 o’clock, and an oversized 30-minute sub-dial, aka the BigEye. The back of the case features a solid medallion with a special, aviation-inspired engraving.
The Longines Avigation BigEye, reference L2.816.4.53.2/4, is offered at an affordable price of $2,625. The watch is water resistant to 30 meters, and it comes on a brown calf leather strap with steel buckle. More information available at longines.com.
