In summer 2017, A. Lange & Söhne’s 1815 Chronograph evolves to include the stopwatch function. The watch belongs to the 1815 collection, which stands for the birth year of Ferdinand A. Lange, who established Germany’s precision watchmaking industry in Glashütte. Just like all other watches from this sophisticated range, the latest addition features traditional style elements, including Arabic numerals and the railway-track minute scale. The 1815 Chronograph combines a white gold case and a black dial with a pulsometer scale, with which heart rates can be determined. The black-colored solid silver dial is encased in a round, polished case, measuring 39.5 millimeters in diameter.
While A. Lange & Söhne has been creating models with stopwatch functions since 1999, this particular model, the 1815 Chronograph, debuted in 2004. The watch was further reinforced in 2010, with a brand new movement.
Immediately recognizable by its classical style elements evocative of the pocket-watch era, the new version of the 1815 Chronograph includes the stopwatch function. In addition, the watch face reveals the railway-track minute scale and the symmetrically arranged subsidiary dials – the subsidiary seconds on the left, mirrored by the 30-minute counter on the right. Additional functions of the new 1815 Chronograph include hours and minutes; subsidiary-seconds dial, chronograph with flyback function, a jumping minute counter, and pulsometer scale.
The watch is powered by a manufactory-made movement, caliber L951.5, which has a power reserve of 60 hours and features an in-house made free-sprung balance spring. The movement beats at a frequency of 18,000 semi-oscillations per hour, allowing time measurements with an accuracy of one fifth of a second. Heart rate measurements can be determined using the pulsimeter scale, graduated from 40 to 200 beats, which is printed on the outer ring of the dial. When the time for 30 beats is measured, the peripheral scale indicates the heart rate per minute.
A. Lange & Söhne 1815 Chronograph is mounted on a black alligator leather strap and a solid white-gold Lange prong buckle. The watch is fitted with a sapphire case-back, which reveals the fine architecture and lavish finishing of the movement. The watch retails for $50,300 USD. For details, visit A. Lange & Sohne.
