The house of A. Lange & Söhne has just revealed the world’s first triple rattrapante chronograph – the Triple Split.
Rattrapante chronograph, or a double chronograph, is one of the most demanding complications in watchmaking. A rattrapante is a watch that includes two separate stopwatch mechanisms, and an additional second hand, enabling the measurement of multiple events that occur simultaneously. The most common use of the rattrapante is for recording successive lap times.
First of its kind, the latest A. Lange & Söhne model is capable of measuring and comparing the time of two simultaneous events that last as long as twelve hours. A triple rattrapante allows the wearer to split not only minutes and seconds, but also hours – something that has never been possible before.
The new model is building up on the success and technical capabilities of A. Lange’s Double Split Chronograph, a watch introduced back in 2004 that allowed the first comparative measurements with an aggregate duration of 30 minutes. The Triple Split multiplies this measuring limit by a factor of 24!
In addition, its rattrapante hands on the minute and hour totalizers make it possible to stop lap and reference times until the rattrapante pusher is pressed to freeze intermediate times. A second press of the rattrapante pusher re-activates the three stopped hands – sweep seconds, minute-, and hour-counter hands – to catch up with the running hands that continue to measure the duration of the event. The Triple Split is equipped with a flyback function, so the chronograph can be reset and restarted instantly.
This limited edition model features a grey solid silver dial and 18-karat white gold case measuring 43.2mm in diameter. The three rattrapante hands are crafted from blued steel, while the chronograph hands are rhodiumed. The hands that display the time and the applied baton hour markers are made of rhodiumed gold, while the hour and minute hands are luminous. A power reserve indicator, showing how much of the 55-hour reserve is available, is also visible on the dial.
A. Lange & Söhne Tripple Split Chronograph is powered by the newly developed in-house movement, caliber L132.1. The model is produced in a limited run of 100 pieces in white gold, and it retails at $147,000. For more information about this model, please visit alange-soehne.com.
