Chopard L.U.C 1963 - a natural descendant of the great historical chronometers
1963 is one of the most important years in the rich history of Chopard watch manufacture. This is the year in which Paul André Chopard, grandson of Chopard’s founding father Louis-Ulysse Chopard, met Karl Scheufele who later decided to buy the Geneva-based watch manufacture. Karl Scheufele has since been Co-President of Chopard, and the company has been operated as an entirely independent family-owned business. The year 2013 marks the 50th anniversary since the famous watchmaking brand was acquired by Mr. Karl Scheufele, which is an excellent occasion to unveil a special celebratory model – the Chopard L.U.C 1963.
The new Chopard L.U.C 1963 is a vintage-inspired but entirely new limited edition chronometer timepiece equipped with a pocket-watch movement. The watch is powered by the movement that is a direct successor of the chronometers that Chopard was still making in 1963. This mechanical hand-wound mechanism, LUC Calibre 63.01-L, is announced as a smaller version of L.U.C Calibre 06.01-L. It beats at a frequency of 28,800 vph and comes with no less than 60 hours of power reserve. The movement is nested within a 44mm case, which is paired with a porcelain-white dial, dauphine hands, black Roman numerals and small seconds sub-dial at 9 o’clock. The off-centered sub-dial is overlapping with a rail track minute circle, creating an unusual visual impression and signifying references to the golden era of chronometers.
To keep with the classic chronometer spirit, and to bring the most accurate and the most appealing display of time, this rather simple movement is free from any grandiose horological complications. It only displays the hours, minutes and seconds. The skill of the Manufacture’s craftsmen reflects in a delicate finishing of the two-tone movement on which the rose gold shade and the color of steel create a beautiful three-dimensional effect. The finishing of the movement – including circular-graining, chamfering, Côtes de Genève and polishing – is all hand-made in Chopard’s workshops.
Chopard L.U.C 1963 50th Anniversary Chronometer is water resistant to 50 meters, it features a glare-proofed sapphire crystal on the front, and a sapphire exhibition case-back. The watch is mounted on a hand-sewn brown alligator leather strap, lined with cognac-toned alligator leather and finished with a pin buckle in 18-carat rose gold or platinum.
Chopard L.U.C 1963 50th Anniversary Chronometer will be offered in only 100 exemplars, individually stamped with the Poinçon de Genève. The model will be available in 18-carat rose gold (Ref. 161963-5001) or platinum (Ref. 161963-9001), each limited to 50 pieces.
