Chopard presents the L.U.C XP Urushi Year of the Goat, the newest rendition of the oversized L.U.C. model, which is, this time, dedicated to the Year of the Goat.
Chopard L.U.C XP Urushi Year of the Goat welcomes the Goat as the eighth sign of the 12-year cycle of animals that appear in the Chinese zodiac. The goat is taking over from horse at lichun, about February 4th, bringing a Yin energy, and symbolizing peace, harmony and tranquility. The watch pays a double tribute to the Orient – not only that it celebrates the Year of the Goat, but it also uses the ancestral Urushi lacquerwork technique, named after the Chinese lacquer tree, in which the artist uses multiple layers of thin, semi-transparent lacquer to create radiant surfaces of sensual and mysterious depth.

Urushi masters use lacquer sourced from the sap of the Toxicodendron vernicifluum, a tree native of southeastern Asia. The resin is harvested once a year, and it matures from three to five years before it gets its honey-like density. What you can see on the dial of the new Chopard L.U.C XP Urushi Year of the Goat is not the traditional mirror-like urushi effect, but a matte satiny finishe obtained by using a closely related Maki-e technique, which is directly derived from Urushi. The Maki-e lacquerwork consists of sprinkling the lacquer with gold powder to create a beautiful and delicate three-dimensional impression. The dial is hand-painted using natural ingredients and colorants, while bamboo tubes or tiny natural bristle brushes were used to apply the dust made precious gold and silver, mother of pearl and other metals. Kiichiro Masumura, a famous Japanese urushi artist, has supervised the creation of the dials decorated with glitter from the company Yamada Heiando, the official supplier to the emperor of Japan.

Beneath the dial beats the Manufacture L.U.C Calibre 96.17-L, which can also be admired through the transparent case-back. This mechanical, self-winding movement is fitted with two barrels and an off-centered micro-rotor, which gives it an extraordinary power reserve capacity and ability to provide at least 65 hours of autonomous operation. The movement is mounted on 29 jewels and it beats at a frequency of 28’800 A/h.

Chopard L.U.C XP Urushi Year of the Goat timepiece is made of 18-karat pink gold and features an elegant round case of 39.50 mm in diameter. The watch measures only 6.80 mm in thickness, and it is water resistant to up to 30 meters. In addition to the pink gold version (reference 161902-5060) the L.U.C XP Urushi Year of the Goat is also available in white gold (reference 161902-1028) – both mounted on a black alligator leather strap with ardillon buckle.

The L.U.C XP Urushi Year of the Goat is delivered in a special black octagonal-shaped presentation box, adorned with Maki-e on the inside. The octagon is another nod to the Orient and its picturesque tradition, as it symbolizes joy and harmony. The price of this model is somewhere around US$24,800.
