Chopard announces its new creation for the upcoming year – the marvelous Chopard LUC XP Urushi, Year of the Horse edition.
Chopard LUC XP Urushi Year of the Horse is the newest sequel to the brand’s prized Urushi series, which reinvents the traditional Japanese art of lacquer painting. The dials of Chopard’s Urushi models are made using the colored lacquers, created by blending pigments with clear lacquer. The paint used here is derived from the sap of the Urushi tree, or more specifically – from its resin. The resin can be harvested only once a year and it usually yields very small quantities of paint. It then matures for a couple of years, before it transforms into dense, honey-textured lacquer. To improve the appearance and the value of the art, Urushi paint can be sprinkled with precious metal dusts and other light-refracting elements. The technique is then called Maki-e, and it is used when the Urushi master wants to accentuate the outlines of its work.
In 2014, Chopard will launch an extremely refined ultra-thin model, L.U.C XP, decorated with a Urushi technique to honor the Year of the Horse, of the Chinese zodiac. Chopard LUC XP Urushi Year of the Horse 2014 Special Edition honors Asia by depicting a prancing horse adorned with lotus flowers, with an entirely hand-painted dial. The symbol of the Chinese calendar, rendered using Japanese traditional artistic techniques, stands for personal fulfillment. The lotus symbol tells a story of a powerful plant that is able to rise clean from the muddy waters and blossom on the surface. The horse, a free-spirited animal with nomadic essence, symbolizes all those that are born in the year of the horse, and that are generally regarded as energetic, passionate and creative individuals.
The extremely elegant Chopard LUC XP Urushi Year of the Horse 2014 Special Edition is crafted from 18-carat rose gold. The watch body is very slim, measuring 39.5 mm in diameter and 6.8 mm in thickness. The watch is powered by a mechanical self-winding movement, L.U.C Calibre 96.17-L, which is hand decorated by the House artisans. Thanks to the smart construction of the off-centered micro-rotor, the movement features two barrels and it runs on 65-hour power reserve. The watch is mounted on a black leather strap and it is water resistant to 30 meters. Ref. 161902-5052.
Chopard LUC XP Urushi Year of the Horse 2014 Special Edition is delivered in a dedicated, octagonal-shaped presentation box, embellished using Urushi techniques. The shape of the box evokes the oriental symbol of gaiety.
