Chopard presents the Superfast Chrono Porsche 919 Edition, a watch dedicated to the new Porsche 919 Hybrid automobile.
Earlier this year, Chopard has been declared the Official Timing Partner of Porsche Motorsport, thus becoming a single watchmaking brand to accompany the return of Porsche Motorsport at the LMP1 Endurance Championship and its “24 Heures du Mans” endurance race. For this special occasion, Porsche has designed its new 919 Porsche Hybrid, which was unveiled at the Geneva International Motor Show in March 2014. The new sports-prototype racing car debuted at the “24 heures du Mans” on June 14-15, 2014, marking Porsche's return to the top level of sports car racing since the Porsche 911 GT1-98 of 1998. Even though the Porsche Team was left empty-handed, both of its 919 Hybrids have made a strong performance demonstrating the vast potential of the 919 Hybrid and its innovative powertrain.
Wolfgang Hatz, Board member for Research and Development Porsche AG, commented that, despite disappointment, the whole team is looking forward to the remaining races of the FIA World Endurance Championship and to Le Mans 2015 – they still believe in their courageous concept and will develop it further.
Since the 919 Hybrid made its sporting debut at the 2014 6 Hours of Silverstone at the Silverstone Circuit, Chopard took the opportunity to draw attention to its Superfast collection. This extraordinary range, which is often described as the superlative sports watch collection, now welcomes a new member - the Superfast Chrono Porsche 919 Edition, which is issued in a 919-piece limited series. The new Superfast Chrono Porsche 919 Edition is beautifully coordinated with the rest of the collection and its distinctive motor racing DNA. This stylish COSC chronometer-certified flyback chronograph is generously sized at 45mm in diameter and made of sturdy stainless steel. The decorative stripes on the dial recall the look of the racing car's rear diffuser, while its engine - a mechanical Chopard 03.05-M caliber – remains exposed through a sapphire crystal case-back.
The reverse side of the watch reveals the commemorative inscription “Official Timing Partner Porsche Motorsport,” while the “919” marking appears in a red rectangle, which is positioned inside a 9 o'clock sub-dial. The final nod to the Porsche racing cars is a sporty rubber strap, which is modelled after the slick tyres with smooth tread, which are used in auto racing to provide the maximum possible contact patch to the road and manage bends at high speeds.
The new Chopard Superfast Chrono Porsche 919 Edition beats at a frequency of 28,800 vph, and provides around 60 hours of power reserve. The watch is powered by the Chopard 03.05-M mechanical self-winding movement, which propels the central display of the hours, minutes and seconds; the small seconds sub-counter at 6 o’clock, a date indicator between 4 and 5 o’clock, and a chronograph with its seconds with flyback function, 30-minute counter at 3 o’clock, and 12-hour counter at 9 o’clock. The steel bezel provides an additional functionality – a tachometer that can be used to calculate a speed based on travel time or measure distance based on speed.
