DeWitt Academia Endless Drive for SIHH 2018

Marina Milojević | 01.11.18 | 05:39 PM

Ahead of the SIHH 2018 salon in Geneve, the house of DeWitt presents the Academia Endless Drive, equipped with a rotating endless screw that can be admired at the center of the dial. Endless screw, an obvious nod to the world of automotive mechanics, is fixed so that it can’t move longitudinally as it rotates. Instead, this stationary screw forces the mechanical part to advance. As explained by DeWitt’s founder Count Jérôme de Witt, the curves of the screw in unidirectional movement symbolize irreversible rotation, which is, by itself, an allegory for the passage of time.

This interesting new model, which will be first revealed at the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie in Geneva, taking place from January 15th to 19th, is powered by a rare winding mechanism that confers an unusual movement to the helical screw linked to the winding system. As the amount of remaining stored energy (60 hours) decreases, the screw rotates. Once the barrel is fully wound, the endless screw slides on its longitudinal axis.

This elegantly proportioned timepiece is crafted from 18-karat rose gold and it measures 42.5 mm in diameter and 12.8 mm in thickness. The case is adorned with DeWitt’s emblematic imperial columns on its sides, and fitted out with double sapphire crystals. The black galvanic dial features silvery-white sub-counters with contrasting rose gold details and indicators. The time is indicated via two discs, located at 9 and 3 o’clock position. The hours and minutes are shown separately – minutes to the right, and hours to the left.

The DeWitt Academia Mathematical, a watch introduced at BaselWorld 2015, is DeWitt’s fourth concept watch. On the mystery watches, the movement is transmitted to the hands through an invisible wheel, which is typically made of transparent sapphire. In its modern-day variant, the mystery w...
