The DeWitt Academia Mathematical is the laureate watch in the category «Design» at the WatchFair Luxembourg 2016.
The DeWitt Academia Mathematical, a watch introduced at BaselWorld 2015, is DeWitt’s fourth concept watch. This imaginative automatic timepiece is inspired by historical mystery watches, on which certain components are hidden from the eye of the observer, so it appears like hands are floating freely above the dial, without any obvious connection to the movement. On the mystery watches, the movement is transmitted to the hands through an invisible wheel, which is typically made of transparent sapphire.
In its modern-day variant, the mystery watch concept, as proposed by the house of DeWitt, features a fascinating dial on which the current hour and minute numerals jump to the forefront from apparently chaotic, scattered group of numbers. There are no hands on the dial of the Academia Mathematical wristwatch, instead, a smoked sapphire dial conceals the autonomous jumping numbers display that comes to life through two vertically aligned apertures.

The complex mechanism of DeWitt’s Academia Mathematical is composed of no less than 384 individual components, most of which have been created in-house. The parts have been hand-assembled by DeWitt’s master watchmakers, forming a powerful automatic movement that operates at a frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour. The mechanism features a screwed balance and a 48-hour power reserve. The movement’s finishes are handcrafted, including both circular and beveled Côtes de Genève patterns, and circular-grained mainplate.

DeWitt Academia Mathematical is crafted from 18-karat rose gold and it measures 42.5 mm in diameter. The round watch case is adorned with DeWitt’s emblematic imperial columns, and it features an open back protected with a sapphire crystal. The watch is mounted on a black alligator strap with triple folding clasp and polished 18-karat rose gold cover with “W” signature. Water resistant to 30 meters, limited to 28 pieces worldwide.

DeWitt Academia Mathematical, reference number AC.MAT.001, retails at 188,000 CHF (without taxes).

DeWitt Academia Endless Drive for SIHH 2018
Ahead of the SIHH 2018 salon in Geneve, the house of DeWitt presents the Academia Endless Drive, equipped with a rotating endless screw that can be admired at the center of the dial. As explained by DeWitt’s founder Count Jérôme de Witt, the curves of the screw in unidirectional movement symbolize irreversible rotation, which is, by itself, an alleg...
