Japanese watch brand Grand Seiko, which, in terms of quality and precision, goes hand in hand with traditional Swiss watchmakers, is launching a special timepiece to celebrate the 65th anniversary of Godzilla. A fictional monster from a series of namesake Japanese movies, first appeared in Ishirō Honda's 1954 movie and became a legendary pop culture icon. It was in the first Godzilla movie that the beast appears in Seiko’s hometown of Ginza, destroying the famous clock tower that climbs above the Wako store, a retail establishment of Seiko's.
The King of the Monsters appeared in more than 35 movies, three of which were made in Hollywood, in countless comic books, video games, and literary works. On the occasion of its 65th anniversary, Godzilla enters the luxury watch realm with the Grand Seiko Godzilla 65th Anniversary Limited Edition timepiece.
The special new model is a part of the Grand Seiko Sports Collection, which also has its own reason to celebrate. The year 2019, marks the 20th anniversary of Spring Drive, so it was natural to choose this particular model for the striking new commemorative edition. Marking two anniversaries at once, a new creation celebrates the anniversaries of both Spring Drive and Japan’s iconic monster, Godzilla.
The stainless steel model features a 44.5 mm angular case and a striking red dial. The sunray dial evokes Godzilla’s signature rays of fire that it shoots from his mouth. The black and red Shark strap recreates the tone and texture of the creature’s skin.
Grand Seiko Godzilla 65th Anniversary Limited Edition is powered by the Spring Drive Caliber 9R15 caliber, which offers a superior precision of 0.5 seconds a day. The automatic movement, mounted on 30 jewels, offers about 70 hours of power reserve. A sapphire crystal on the case-back reveals the workings of the movement, as well as an illustration made by Shinji Higuchi. The stamping on the case-back shows the iconic scene in which Godzilla destroys the clock tower.
Grand Seiko Godzilla 65th Anniversary Limited Edition will be available from November 2019 at selected Grand Seiko and Seiko boutiques and selected retail partners across the world. Produced in a 650-piece run, the watch comes with a price tag of €12,700 EUR. For more information, visit grand-seiko.com.
