IWC Da Vinci Perpetual Calendar Chronograph & Da Vinci Tourbillon Rétrograde Chronograph | SIHH 2017

Marina Milojević | 01.16.17 | 09:31 PM

In 2017, IWC Schaffhausen revisits the iconic design of the 1980’s and presents the revamped Da Vinci collection. The range includes Da Vinci Automatic 36 and the Da Vinci Automatic Moon Phase 36, which are tailored for women, and a selection of Automatic models that are suited for both women and men. With the new Da Vinci collection, the female target group is the focus of interest. However, IWC has also launched two of more generously sized models – the Da Vinci Perpetual Calendar Chronograph and the Da Vinci Tourbillon Rétrograde Chronograph, measuring 43mm and 44mm in diameter, respectively. Same as the rest of the collection, they have smooth, round cases, with slightly narrower and less pronounced win-frame bezel with its peripheral groove. IWC has also adopted the large Arabic numerals from the round Da Vinci together with the slim, lancet-shaped hands.

The Da Vinci Tourbillon Rétrograde Chronograph (Ref. IW393101) features an unusual combination of a classic tourbillon with a retrograde date and a sporty chronograph on a single dial.  Now, let us take a close look at each of them.

The Da Vinci Perpetual Calendar Chronograph is the first watch in the history of IWC to combine a chronograph from the 89000-caliber family with the most romantic of all complications – the perpetual calendar’s moon phase display. The latter, located in a subdial at 12 o’clock position, features the miniature representation of the moon and the shadow of the earth depicted on a single disc that rotates beneath an aperture in the lower part of the subdial.

The Da Vinci Perpetual Calendar Chronograph is available in two versions: 18-carat red gold and stainless steel, each sized at 43mm in diameter and 15,5mm in thickness. On the red gold model, the case, horns, crown and push buttons are all made of solid 18-carat red gold, while the watch is paired with a dark brown alligator leather strap. In the stainless-steel version with its black alligator leather strap, the slate-colored counters are equipped with rhodium-plated facets. The see-through case-back reveals the IWC-manufactured 89630-chronograph calibre with an automatic double-pawl winding system, endowed with 68-hour power reserve.

The Da Vinci Tourbillon Rétrograde Chronograph

The Da Vinci Tourbillon Rétrograde Chronograph unites a classic tourbillon, a chronograph, and a retrograde date indication. The watch, which is crafted from 18-carat red gold houses the new in house 89900 calibre, whose pallet and escape wheel are made of diamond-coated silicon. The chronograph function at “12 o’clock” allows stopped times of up to 11 hours and 59 minutes, while the central seconds hand measures stopped times to an accuracy of one-quarter of a second. Besides the chronograph and the flying tourbillon, this watch also features the retrograde date display, which can be admired on the left-hand side of the dial. The hand shows the date from the 1st to the 31st of the month as travels across the arc. Once it reaches the end of the scale, it instantaneously jumps back to its starting position.

The case, which measures 44 millimeters in diameter and 17 millimeters in thickness, water-resistant to 3 bar and paired with a dark brown alligator leather strap by Santoni. The automatic movement beats at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour, and provides around 68 hours of power reserve.
