Romain Gauthier's unique Logical One Secret Kakau Höfke timepiece

Romain Gauthier, the independent Swiss high-end watch manufacturer, is getting ready to unveil its latest collection at Baselworld 2016, which runs March 17th to 24th. The brand has announced the launch of five new creations, including some casual timepieces, some with a dark twist, but also a stunning micro-painted engraving timepiece that pays tribute to a Chinese national treasure. While we’re all waiting for BaselWorld to open up its doors, why not take a look at one of the most perfect recent exemplars of true Haute Horlogerie  - the Romain Gauthier Logical One Secret Kakau Höfke timepiece.

This outstanding creation is made in collaboration with the Brazilian artist Kakau Höfke, a long-time friend of the Gauthier family. The two parties have joined their forces to create a special new rendition of the Logical One model, which is now a Secret watch, featuring a dial that is partially concealed by a golden cover. Romain Gauthier uses the upper portion of the lid as a canvas to paint a beautiful tribute to the most vibrant of all cities, Rio de Janeiro. A modernist depiction of Rio de Janeiro, evokes Corcovado, the iconic mountain on which stands the ‘Christ the Redeemer’ statue, as well as the pattern that featured on the promenade (calçada) bordering the Ipanema beach.

The beautiful illustration is rendered in micro-marquetry technique, based on traditional stone marquetry. The artist has used 352 unique, mirror-polished, miniature tiles of jade and agate, each merely 0.5mm thick, to decorate the dial. Each piece had been hand-finished and hand-applied, which required three months of solid work to complete. Light and dark tiles were cut from the same lavender jade stone from the Ipanema promenade, while tiles cut from blue agate make up the Corcovado backdrop. The off-centered hours and minutes sub-dial, as well as the small second sub-dial, are also adorned with this same pattern.

A single press on the pusher, which is integrated into the white gold case, releases the cover and reveals its inner side engraved with the Romain Gauthier logo and Kakau Höfke’s signatures. Lifting up the cover discloses the, in-house movement featuring flat chain-and-fusee style constant force system with ruby chain links, balance wheel boasting a gracefully curved bridge, and ergonomic push button winding system. The sapphire crystal case-back allows for further views of the movement, and reveals the 46-hour power reserve indicator.

Romain Gauthier Logical One Secret Kakau Höfke is a unique piece, designed as a part of Manufacture Romain Gauthier’s 10th anniversary celebrations. The watch utilizes an in-house movement which beats at a frequency of 28,800 vph. The mechanism is assembled from 357 components, all finished in the spirit of the highest level haute horlogerie.
