Longines presents its new Longines Avigation Oversize Crown, a watch based on the vintage aviator’s model from the 1920’s.
The Longines Avigation Oversize Crown is a beautiful example of an aviation watch, crafted from stainless steel. The new model is named after its oversize crown and winding stem, which enables a pilot wearing gloves to access the bezel without accidentally turning the crown.
The watch case measures 41mm in diameter, framing a lovely black dial with white numerals and gold-plated pear-shaped hands. The hands are coated in luminous material, which gives off a nice warm glow in the darkness of the cockpit, making the watch extremely easy to read in all light conditions.
The watch is topped with a bi-directional rotating fluted bezel that features an index marking. It can be turned in both directions, making it possible for the pilot to set the reference points. On the original model, this type of bezel enabled the pilots to record time. This was an extremely useful feature at that time, since the chronographs were still rare and bezels could be used to record times of various events. Today, it may be of use to an urban gentleman to record the times of meetings, as Longines suggests.
Longines Avigation Oversize Crown has kept the basic design of the original vintage model but, in its new incarnation, it features a mechanical self-winding movement and arrives on the market in three different variants.
The simplest version shows the hours, minutes and seconds, along with the date indication. This type of The Longines Avigation Oversize Crown model is fitted with an L615 self-winding mechanical movement. Reference number: L2.777.4.53.2.
There is also a version with a second time zone as well as a date aperture at 3 o’clock. This watch is propelled by L704 self-winding mechanical movement. Reference number: L2.778.4.53.2.
The third version is propelled by Longines' exclusive single push-piece chronograph movement (L788). This variant displays the hours and minutes, a date at 6 o’clock, a 30-minute counter at 3 o’clock and a small seconds at 9 o’clock. Reference number: L2.783.4.53.2
