The house of Longines revisits one of its historical models, inspired by military requirements.
The new military watch from this famous Swiss manufacture, replicates the design of a watch created for British paratroopers in the 1940s. The piece is distinguished for its restrained design and a distinctive broad arrow on the dial, as well as by the NATO strap, which is both functional and foolproof. The original Longines watch was designed exclusively for the Combined Operations Command created by the British War Office during the Second World War. Each unit was marked with the initials COSD, referring to this special department of the British War Office.
In its contemporary rendition, the Longines Heritage Military COSD is housed in a large, 40 mm wide, stainless steel case. The case accommodates the L619.2 self-winding calibre, which is based on the ETA 2892/A2 movement. The mechanism is built on 21 jewels, it beats at a frequency of 28'800 vibrations per hour, and provides around 42 hours of power reserve. In addition to the centrally positioned hours and minutes, the movement also enlivens indications for seconds, and a date at 3 o’clock.
Longines Heritage Military COSD is available in two variants – with either matt black or opaline dial. In both of its executions, the watch features 11 Arabic numerals and 24 hour indicator in red. The legibility is improved with Super-LumiNova dots and batons on the minute railway. The luminescent material is also used on rhodium-plated or blued hours and minutes hands. A red 24-hour scale enhanced with blued hands, while a railway-track minute ring highlights the military style of the watch. The upper part of the dial reveals a broad arrow, which is actually, a symbol used in Britain at the time to designate government property. The symbol is often found on different pieces of military equipment, including time instruments that were once used by the British forces.
Longines Heritage Military COSD is paired with a khaki NATO strap, but it is also available on a black leather strap. The watch is water resistant to 30 meters, and it features a modern-day alternative to mineral glass – a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating.
