Louis Moinet presents Memoris, the first “chronograph-watch” in history

On the occasion of the BaselWorld 2015 trade show, the house of Louis Moinet launched the Memoris timepiece, a watch that is announced as the most important launch the brand has ever done. As explained by Jean-Marie Schaller, CEO of Louis Moinet, this extraordinary timepiece celebrates the Ateliers’ tenth anniversary, and the bi-centenary of the world’s first chronograph, which was invented by Louis Moinet.

In 2015, the Manufacture presents what is described as the first chronograph-watch in history, with the chronograph as the primary function, and the time as the complication. As Schaller explains, the concept of the chronograph-watch started to develop almost three years ago by taking a completely different method to watchmaking rather than trying simply to improve on an existing model. The starting point was to break with the traditional premise that the chronograph is an additional complication on top of the time-telling function. Instead, the Maison made the chronograph the heart of the design, with an additional time function.

To create this revolutionary mechanism, the Atelier Louis Moinet has partnered with Concepto. Together they came up with a chronograph with a traditional clutch column wheel, and made the entire chronograph function visible from the dial side. Each feature of the chronograph’s action can now be admired in its totality, as soon as the pusher is pressed. To fully showcase the dance of the movement’s steel and gears, the brand had to redesign all of its additional items. The movement is paired with a new case, new hands, a new dial, a new oscillating weight, a new folding clasp, and more. In addition, the watch features exclusive synthetic gemstones. Black zircon, in a screwed setting, has been used decoratively on the case horns.

The hours and minutes function is visible at 6 o’clock, the seconds appear at 9 o’clock position, and the 30-minute chronograph counter appears at 3 o’clock. The 60-second chronograph function is facilitated via the central chrono-hand of Monogram design. The hour and minute dew-drop hands are blue tinted with luminous coating.

Louis Moinet Memoris is available in pink gold and white gold, in three limited editions of 60 pieces each. The watch measures 46mm in diameter, and it houses the new 302-component caliber LM54. The monopusher chronograph movement beats at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour, and provides around 48 hours of power reserve. The watch features a unique automatic pawl winding system “Energie Plus,” which incorporates a spring with a clab claw design, and a ceramic ball bearing mounted on the rotor. This enables the watch to be wound in both directions, and optimizes the movement of the rotor. Finally, in the spirit of the finest watchmaking, the swivel of the yoke is aligned along the same axis as the second wheel to improve the engagement of its moving parts, which improves every stage of the chronograph function: start, stop, and reset.

Louis Moinet Memoris timepiece is water resistant to 50 meters. Each of its three versions is mounted on a hand-sewn Louisiana alligator leather with alligator lining, with 18K gold folding clasp with “Fleur-de-lis” motif (black DLC-coated). The watches are delivered in a special presentation box together with a Louis Moinet book.
