On the occasion of the SIHH 2014 exhibition, Officine Panerai has launched two new gold pocket watches in special editions of only 50 pieces each: the Pocket Watch 3 Days Oro Rosso and the Pocket Watch 3 Days Oro Bianco.
Officine Panerai is renewing the centuries old tradition of pocket watches, with the new Pocket Watch 3 Days models. Today considered very rare and precious, pocket watches were, until after World War I, the most common type of a watch. The first timepieces, which originate from the 16th century, were actually pocket watches evolved from clocks, which were designed to be worn on clothing, or on a chain around the neck. During the 17th century, gentlemen started to wear watches in pockets instead of as pendants, and the very first wristwatches of the 20th century were widely regarded as lady’s accessories. Wristwatches for men became popular during the World War I, when they were specially designed and issued to combatants. Many of these soldiers continued to wear their pieces, even when they were demobilized, and the trend soon became very fashionable, gradually transforming the pocket watches into rare, old-fashioned mechanical marvels prized only by watch connoisseurs and collectors.

Officine Panerai Pocket Watch 3 Days arrives in a cushion-shaped Radiomir case, evoking the first prototypes of this model, dating from 1936. The new models are available in red gold and white gold, and in a 50mm diameter. The large cases have a gold bow above the winding crown at 12 o’clock, and a classic Panerai-type dial with large baton hour markers and four numerals at the cardinal points. The white gold model has an anthracite dial, while the red gold case embraces the sun-brushed brown dial.

In the spirit of vintage Panerai dials from the 1930s, Pocket Watch 3 Days models are having a sandwich-type dials in which two superimposed discs enfold a layer of ecru Super-LumiNova. The upper disc features apertures through which the light shines from below, which results in remarkable legibility even in low light conditions.

The case-back of this watch features a large round cover which can be lifted to reveal the finish of the P.3001/10 Caliber, which is completely developed and created in Officine Panerai manufactures in Neuchâtel. There is also a power reserve indicator set in the back, along with the chamfered bridges and the two skeletonized barrels.

The Officine Panerai Pocket Watch 3 Days is complemented with a 40cm long watch chain, designed by the Manufacture. The matching chain is created from the very same material as the case of the watch – either red gold or white gold, and terminated by two hooks. The watch is water resistant to 50 meters and it is delivered in the specially designed mahogany box that also includes a special stand on which the watch can be placed to turn it into a table clock.
