Panerai Luminor Lo Scienziato Luminor 1950 Tourbillon GMT Titano

Marina Milojević | 02.07.18 | 06:20 AM

At this year’s SIHH watch salon, Panerai introduced the limited edition Panerai Luminor Lo Scienziato Luminor 1950 Tourbillon GMT Titano, a technically advanced new model combining lightweight titanium case, fully skeletonized movement, a rare tourbillon, and a GMT complication.

The Lo Scienziato (“The Scientist” in Italian) range of radically skeletonized tourbillon watches was introduced back in 2010 to honor the Tuscan-born genius Galileo Galilei. This famous Italian polymath, one of the pioneers of the modern science, was born in in the Tuscany region of Central Italy, the very same province in which Officine Panerai was established back in 1860. Besides his countless accomplishments in the fields of astronomy, engineering, physics, and mathematics, Galileo also worked in applied science and technology, describing the first scientific investigations of the pendulums.

In 2018, the Lo Scienziato range welcomes a new version equipped with a 3D-printed titanium case. Titanium is an extremely lightweight yet sturdy material, known for being about 40% lighter than commonly used stainless steel. However, Panerai used the special technology of Direct Metal Laser Sintering to alter the properties of the material and make it even lighter. The case was hollowed out on the inside to create a geometrical cavity without compromising the solidity of the material, its tension, or water resistance.

In its latest iteration, the Lo Scineziato is even more attractive and sportier than ever. The metallic tones of the case beautifully harmonize with the blue of the hands, and blue accents on the flange and the sewing of the leather strap. The emblematic Luminor case, distinguished by its prominent crown-lock lever bridge, measures 47mm in diameter and is water resistant to 100 meters.

The lightness of the new Lo Scienziato is further reinforced by the extreme skeletonizaton of its P.2005/T Titanium movement, carried out by the Laboratorio di Idee at the Panerai Manufacture. The hand-wound caliber is packed with a full range of technical features: hours, minutes, small seconds, GMT with am/pm indication, a power reserve of six days with indication of the power remaining on the back, and a Tourbillon escapement. At 9 o’clock is the small seconds dial, inside which a small indicator rotates, showing the rotation of the Tourbillon. At 3 o’clock, another small dial indicates whether the central second time zone hand (GMT) refers to day or night. The power reserve is shown by a special indicator on the back of the movement, visible through the large sapphire crystal porthole.

To augment the beauty of the skeleton movement, the watch has no dial. Those visible Arabic numerals and indexes are milled in one piece with the flange. The tourbillon cage rotates (perpendicularly with respect to the balance wheel axis) once every 30 seconds instead of the traditional 60 seconds tourbillon.
