On the occasion of the SIHH 2017 exhibition, the house of Panerai has unveiled the cream of the crop in precise mechanics – a watch to technically advanced that it comes with a 50-year guarantee! The new Panerai Lab-ID Luminor 1950 Carbotech 3 Days is a revolutionary watch fitted with a movement that needs no lubrication whatsoever, which comes in a case made of carbon, complete with a new black dial lit by blue emission Super-LumiNova.
As announced by Panerai, the past and the future have met in this special limited edition, available in only 50 exemplars worldwide. The timeless, historical Luminor 1950 is now unveiled with a series of technical innovations, as a contemporary timepiece of exceptional performance. Every component of Panerai’s new LAB-ID relies on the exceptional properties of carbon. The case is made of a composite material based on carbon fiber, the dial is covered with carbon nanotubes, while the movement, made from carbon composites, works perfectly without any need for lubrication! The watch needs no oils or liquid lubricants of any kind whatsoever, and this is what allows Panerai to offer a half-century warranty.
The large, 49 mm in diameter case is made of carbotech, a dense, sturdy material based on carbon fiber. The color of the material varies with the cut, making each individual case absolutely unique. The same material is also used for the bridge device with its locking lever protecting the winding crown, which ensures water resistance to about 100 meters of depth.
A deep black dial of Panerai LAB-ID is made using the technology of carbon nanotubes. The result is an extremely legible dial with the classic sandwich structure invented by Panerai. In other words, the luminous material, in this case a blue-emission Super-LuminNova – appears through the openings in the dial, corresponding to the hour markers and the small seconds dial. The legibility is further enhanced by the use of special carbon nanotubes coating, possibly Vantablack, which absorbs light to reduce reflection to a minimum and give the dial its particularly deep black color. Since it is not possible to print or stamp a dial like this, Panerai has printed the sapphire crystal with anti-reflective treatment.
The new PANERAI LAB-ID is powered by a P.3001/C hand wound calibre with a power reserve of three days. For the first time ever, the Panerai calibre is presented in a semi-skeletonized version, made of carbon, and mounted to only four jewels - the upper jewel and cap jewel on the upper balance pivot, and the matching two on the lower pivot. To remove the need for further lubricating the bridges and mainplates made from a tantalum-based ceramic. For the same reason, the lever and escape wheel are made from DLC-coated silicon. The two spring barrels of the P.3001 calibre are also free of lubricants and, instead, they have been coated with different high-tech materials, including DLC. Finally, a surface coating of DLC on the four jewels means that there is no need to further lubricate the Incabloc® anti-shock device.
The case back of the watch features a large porthole protected by a sapphire crystal, allowing the wearer to admire most of the mechanical movement and read the power reserve indicator.
Panerai LAB-ID Luminor 1950 Carbotech 3 Days 49mm is supplied with a black leather strap, with contrasting sewing in the same shade of blue as the luminant of the dial. The watch, reference PAM00700, is available in 50 pieces and retails for €50,000.
