Panerai Lo Scienziato Luminor Tourbillon GMT Titano

Marina Milojević | 06.06.16 | 04:47 PM

Earlier this year, on the occasion of the SIHH 2016 exhibition, Officine Panerai introduced one of its most significant pieces for this year – the remarkable skeletonized tourbillon with GMT function - Lo Scienziato Luminor Tourbillon GMT Titano.

The watch belongs to the “Lo Scienziato” collection, which pays tribute to the Tuscan genius of Galileo Galilei. The range comprises heavily skeletonized tourbillons honors Galilei as one of the rare inventors whose discoveries laid the foundations for future development of mechanical watches. The latest addition to the Lo Scienziato series is the Luminor 1950 Tourbillon GMT Titano, which is a special edition timepiece available in only 150 exemplars.

Thanks to the clever choice of material, the Panerai Lo Scienziato Luminor Tourbillon GMT Titano watch is extremely lightweight, despite the fact it measures no less than 47 mm in diameter. The large, but comfortable case, provides a stage for a full wealth of features: hours, minutes, small seconds, GMT with am/pm indication, a power reserve of six days with indication of the power remaining on the back, and a tourbillon escapement.

Another feature that contributes to its lightness is the skillful work of minimization carried on the case and the movement. To reduce the weight of the case, Panerai’s watchmakers have used an innovative technology, Direct Metal Laser Sintering, which enables it to be hollowed out internally in order to form a complex cavity, but without compromising its water resistance. The technology had allowed Panerai to build up a 3D object, layer by layer, using a fiber optic laser and powdered titanium. Each of the individual layers, measuring only 0.02mm in thickness, is merged together in a solid form that would be impossible to get by the means of traditional working methods.

Panerai’s P.2005 mechanical movement now, for the first time, appears in skeletonized version, with titanium bridges and plates (P.2005/T). Thanks to the lower density of titanium, the overall weight of the movement is 35% less than that of the P.2005/S skeletonized version, whose components are made of brass. The delicate work of skeletonizing the bridges, plates and spring barrels, is visible from the watch face thanks to the absence of a traditional dial. All of the dial elements – counters, indices, numerals, and hands, are embedded directly in the movement, or attached to the flange of the watch.

The small seconds counter is placed at 9 o’clock. Inside of it is a small indicator, which rotates to show in which direction the tourbillon is turning. The seconds counter is offset by a small dial that shows whether the central second time zone hand (GMT) refers to day or night. The remaining amount of the long power reserve of 6 days is shown through the sapphire case-back, by a special indicator on the back of the movement. The wearer can also admire all fascinating details of watch’s micro-mechanics such as the winding and unwinding of the spring, the interconnection of the wheels, or the rotation of the tourbillon cage.
