On the occasion of the SIHH 2015 exhibition, Panerai is reviving a historical chronograph from 1943, which was once made for the deck officers of the Royal Italian Navy.
The brand new Panerai Mare Nostrum Titano 52mm comes in a special limited edition of only 150 examples. The watch is named after the ancient Roman name for the Mediterranean Sea - “Mare Nostrum” or “Our Sea” same as its historical predecessor from 1943. During the Second World War, Panerai created a series of chronographs for the deck officers of the Royal Italian Navy and, most probably, this was the first Panerai chronograph ever created. A few prototypes of the historical Mare Nostrum chronograph have been preserved, enabling the Panerai to reconstruct the new watch with high technical and aesthetic accuracy.
Even though it faithfully mirrors the 1943 model, the new Mare Nostrum Titano is made according to the standards of modern haute horlogerie. For example, while the vintage model was made of steel, its contemporary counterpart comes in a tonneau-shaped case made of brushed titanium. This further means that it has superior anti-allergenic properties and that it is much lighter and more resistant to various stresses and corrosion. Two push buttons, made of titanium, are placed at the lateral side of the case, and their main function is to control the chronograph. The chronograph readings are indicated by the central seconds hand, and by a minor minutes sub-dial at three o’clock. The small seconds counter is placed at 9 o’clock position.
The dial of the Mare Nostrum Titano chronograph is composed of two levels, and it features an elegant tobacco brown hue. The historic model was, instead, painted in dark green. The watch case is fitted with a wide flat titanium bezel, while the screw-down back and the winding crown are engraved with the words “Mare Nostrum.”
The Mare Nostrum Titanio is powered by a hand-wound manufacture movement, the OP XXV calibre, which is based on the Minerva 13-22, a vertical clutch column wheel chronograph caliber. The movement beats at 18,000 vibrations per hour, just as its historical predecessor, and boasts bridges made of Maillechort, and decorated with a refined Côtes de Genève finish.
Panerai Mare Nostrum Titano 52mm, reference number PAM00603 is mounted on a brown leather strap, and it is water resistant to about 30 meters. The watch runs on approximately 55 hours of power reserve.
