At this year’s SIHH exhibition in Geneve, Officine Panerai presents an exclusive new creation: Pocket Watch Tourbillon GMT Ceramica.
Officine Panerai Pocket Watch Tourbillon GMT Ceramica is an interesting and unusual creation for so many reasons. First of all, this is the very first pocket watch coming from the Officine Panerai manufactures. The old Panerai store in Florence has always been selling the finest Swiss pocket watches, but the company was mainly focused on production of military watches, especially for the Royal Italian Navy. Now, in the year 2013, Panerai presents its very first watch that is made to be carried in a pocket.
The very first pocket watches were made in 16th century Europe, and they were rather large – sized between the clocks and the watches. They were worn exclusively by men, while the wristwatches were considered feminine and unmanly. Today, this type of watches isn’t so popular or common, having been superseded by wristwatches ever since the WWI. The wristwatches became popular in the 1920s, but they popularity skyrocketed when soldiers on the battlefield found pocket watches to be impractical, and started to appreciate wristwatches that were more easily accessed. Panerai Pocket Watch Tourbillon GMT Ceramica now combines the best of both worlds. It marries the tradition and technical innovation in a unique and captivating way. The result is an utterly bold and masculine contemporary creation nested in a Radiomir case of 59 mm in diameter.
Panerai Pocket Watch Tourbillon GMT Ceramica is made from zirconium oxide, which is the toughest ceramic commercially available. Inside of it beats the P.2005/S hand-wound movement, linked to the case with twelve rods. Thanks to the skeleton dial and the smart case-construction, the movement looks like it is floating in the middle of the case. The P.2005/S caliber is developed in produced in the Officine Panerai manufacture in Neuchâtel. It drives the indications for hours, minutes, small seconds, second time zone, 24h indicator, power reserve indicator on the back, tourbillon. Thanks to the three spring barrels, the movement offers six days of autonomy, while the discrete indicator, positioned at the back of the case, informs the wearer about the remaining power.
The chain of the watch is also made of black ceramic and it is linked to the case by a skeleton device that looks like a protective bridge for the crown. The user can easily remove the chain by pressing a small button, and continue to use the watch as a table clock.
Panerai Pocket Watch Tourbillon GMT Ceramica PAM00446 is issued in only 50 exemplars.
