The Radiomir 1940 is the focal point of the new Panerai collection presented at Watches & Wonders 2015, which is taking place in Hong Kong from 30 September to 3 October 2015.
On the occasion of the Watches & Wonders exhibition, the house of Panerai has introduced a couple of new models. The Panerai Radiomir range is enriched more than ten new references, all inspired by the historical timepiece from the beginning of the 20th century. As described by Philippe Daverio, historian and art critic, the Florentine watches of Panerai are classics of modernity: „They are timeless objects, even though they mark the time and indicate it with the absolute precision of their mechanics.”
The Panerai Radiomir 1940 was specifically designed for the Italian Navy, which required a robust and reliable water-resistant timepieces that would also be perfectly legible even under very poor lighting conditions. The design of the contemporary models remains faithful to the international style of Italian rationalism in the Thirties and Forties, being pure, restrained, and designed to perform a function and not merely for aesthetic reasons.
One of the most striking new additions to the Panerai Radiomir range is the new Panerai Radiomir 1940 3 Days, which comes in steel or red gold, fitted with the P.1000 calibre, hand-wound with a power reserve of three days. The movement is accommodated inside of a 42mm wide case. The new P.1000 calibre is entirely crafted in the Panerai manufacture. It features a large brush-finished bridge covering the major part of the wheelwork and a bridge with two supports holding the balance, which oscillates at a frequency of 4 Hz (28,800 vibrations per hour). The mechanism beats at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour, while two spring barrels connected in series, ensure a long power reserve of three days.
The new Radiomir 1940 3 Days has a system for stopping the balance, which works in synergy with the device for resetting the seconds hand. In other words, when the winding crown is pulled out, the balance wheel stops and the seconds hand is moved back to zero. This enables the user to synchronize the watch exactly with the reference time signal. The sapphire crystal case-back enables the movement to be admired, while the dial features the sandwich structure that maximizes the visibility and legibility of the markings.
The case is water-resistant to 10 bar (a depth of about 100 meters) in the polished AISI 316L stainless steel version and to 5 bar (about 50 meters) in the gold version. In the steel model (PAM00574) the alligator strap is coordinated with the light green of the Super-LumiNova®, while the model in red gold (PAM00575) is supplied with a black alligator strap.
