One of the Panerai’s new proposals for SIHH 2015 is the Radiomir Firenze Special Edition timepiece, which revisits the art of traditional hand-engraving and demonstrates the iconic expertise of Italian craftsmen.
Officine Panerai’s new special edition, the Radiomir Firenze 3 Days Acciaio 47mm (referenced as PAM00604) embodies the experience and mastery of Italian artists and craftsmen in 99 absolutely unique watches. Each of these beautiful timepieces is engraved entirely by hand, reminding us that each gesture is the expression of knowledge and centuries-long experience. Since there is no way to exactly replicate an action of a human limb, each exemplar of the Panerai Radiomir Firenze is completely unique and different.
Panerai Radiomir Firenze 3 Days Acciaio is made of brushed stainless steel (acciaio in Italian), and it measures 47 mm – just the same diameter as the very first watch created by Officine Panerai in 1936. The Firenze Special Edition is entirely hand-engraved by expert Italian craftsmen, who carved the surface of the case with decorative motifs inspired by Florentine iconography. The lines engraved on the elegantly brushed case, form geometric figures and famous Florentine symbols, such as the Florentine lily, the emblem of Tuscany’s famous city.
To produce each case, one engraver must work for more than a week. The motifs are first drawn as a provisional sketch, using powdered chalk or magnesium powder. The lines are then engraved with a burin, and this stage is particularly demanding due to the hardness of the AISI 316L stainless steel. The case is paired with a black dial, which is typical of vintage Panerai watches, that bears inscribed the name of Florence – Officine Panerai’s birthplace. The dial features a satiné soleil finish, and it has a distinctive sandwich structure. This means that the bottom layer of the dial is coated with luminous material, while the upper layer features deep cutouts. In low light conditions, when the light from the luminous material protrudes through the apertures, the numbers and indices stand out nicely, almost three-dimensionally, from the rest of the dial.
The Panerai Radiomir Firenze is powered by the in-house hand-wound P.3000 calibre. The movement oscillates at a frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour, and provides around 72 hours of power reserve. It features two spring barrels connected in series, to ensure three days of autonomous operation. Thanks to the sapphire glass porthole, which is located in the center of the case-back, the movement can be easily admired. The new Panerai Radiomir Firenze (PAM00604) is water resistant to 100 meters. The watch is mounted on a black alligator leather strap with contrasting ecru stitching. The watch is only available in the historic Panerai boutique in the Tuscan city.
