Introducing the Cartier Rotonde De Cartier Astrotourbillon Skeleton Calibre 9461 MC.

As we’re approaching the end of the year, more and more luxury brands are beginning to unveil at least some information about their upcoming releases. A couple of days ago, I gave you a sneak preview of two of the new Cartier’s creations for SIHH 2015: the Rotonde De Cartier Reversed Tourbillon model, and the new Crash Skeleton. Today, we’ll take a closer look at another model from the Rotonde De Cartier watch family – the extraordinary new Astrotourbillon Skeleton timepiece, which is powered by the Calibre 9461 MC. Same as two other models, the new Cartier Rotonde De Cartier Astrotourbillon Skeleton will be officially unveiled on the occasion of the Salon International De La Haute Horlogerie, which takes place from 19-23 January, in Geneva, Switzerland.

Cartier Rotonde De Cartier Astrotourbillon Skeleton

The Astrotourbillon model was created by the house of Cartier back in 2010. At that time, the new model was announced a contemporary take on traditional tourbillon complication, which now not only diminishes the effects of gravity on the movement, but also plays a central part of the watch design. The main difference between Cartier’s invention and the traditional tourbillon is that the Astrotourbillon features a new type of escapement, the one that spins around the periphery of the dial, and completes one full revolution per minute. In this way, the tourbillon also serves as a seconds indicator, while its delicate elongated carriage reminds of a celestial body – hence the name Astrotourbillon.

Cartier Rotonde De Cartier Astrotourbillon Skeleton

The new Cartier Rotonde De Cartier Astrotourbillon Skeleton is certainly going to be one of the most beautiful models at the next year’s SIHH exhibition. This highly complicated timepiece is made of precious platinum and 18-karat white gold, and it will be available in a small limited edition comprising of 100 pieces. In its new rendition, the intriguing Astrotourbillon is fully skeletonized, with its complex movement Calibre 9461 MC being fully exposed. The Astrotourbillon has been entirely stripped highlighting the movement’s structure so that it “vanishes” behind the striking XII and VI numerals on the dial. The main plate of the movement, actually, rests on these two numeral-bridges that support the whole structure of the caliber.

Cartier Calibre 9461 MC

The Calibre 9461 MC is a mechanical movement with manual winding, which is built from 233 individual parts and fitted with 23 jewels. The mechanism is made of platinum, it beats at 21,600 vibrations per hour and promises at least 48 hours of power reserve.

The year 2017 marks the 100th anniversary of Cartier Tank, a watch invented by Louis Cartier (a grandson of Cartier’s founder Louis-François Cartier) back in 1917. The unique design of this watch is inspired by  Renault military tanks, which Cartier saw in use on the Western Front. Its case is both square and rectangle, and its strap is seamlessly integrated into vertical sidebars called "brancards," representing tank treads. The Tank was introduced in 1918, and during the next year, only six pieces watches were produced. Since its design is...

In just a couple weeks, at the SIHH 2017 exhibition in Genève, the house of Cartier will present yet another of its exceptional Métiers d’Art creations. The famous Swiss Maison, known for exploration and preservation of ancient and traditional decorative techniques, has now turned to the technique of heat bluing.
