Ahead of the SIHH 2017 exhibition, which is held in Geneva every January, the house of Cartier is giving us a first look at three new watches that will be officially unveiled at the Salon. Each of three pending mechanical wonders embodies one of the signature looks from the brand: mystery clocks, skeletonizing and Cartier's signature panther.
Cartier Rotonde de Cartier Minute Repeater Mysterious Double Tourbillon perpetuates the brand’s tradition in creating technically sophisticated, beautiful watches. The mysterious double tourbillon is a quite unique complication. This unbelievably complex mechanism, in the service of simple elegance, is Cartier’s patented invention that was first introduced at SIHH 2013. Its flying tourbillon, which turns once on its own axis every 60 seconds, appears to be floating completely free in space, with no visible attachment to the gear train. The complication consists of a regular tourbillon, which is, actually, embedded into a disc of sapphire crystal. The result is a breathtaking illusion of a levitating cage.
While on most of the repeater watches hammers and gongs appear on the back of the movement, here, they are visible from the dial side. In addition, there is no dial to conceal them, and the whole watch has been designed so to optimize the quality and volume of sound, its loudness, timbre, richness, and duration.
The ultra-light case, which measures 45mm in diameter, is crafted from titanium. It houses Cartier’s in-house manual-wind Calibre 9407 MC, which is built on 448 individual components and stamped with the “Poinçon De Genève.” The open-worked movement features a black rhodium finish and offers 3.5 days of power reserve. In addition to the titanium version, which will be available in a limited edition of 50 pieces, the Rotonde de Cartier Minute Repeater Mysterious Double Tourbillon watch is also produced in platinum with diamond set bezel, and platinum with pavé diamond dial and bezel, in a limited edition of 30 pieces, and 20 pieces, respectively.
Cartier Rotonde de Cartier Skeleton Mysterious Hour marries the art of extreme skeletonization with the secret movement of both hour and minute hands. The complication, which is inspired by historic Cartier clocks, uses transparent discs to move the hands. The skeletonizing of the dial exposes a great part of the hand-wound caliber 9983 MC movement, without compromising the secret of its mysterious hours complication. The connection between the hour and minute hands and the movements remains unrevealed, as they appear to float around the dial without any visible attachment. The hours and minutes display is located at 9 o’clock position, and framed by stylized Roman numerals.
The Rotonde de Cartier Skeleton Mysterious Hour is presented in a large, 42mm palladium case, which houses the manufacture Calibre 9983 MC, which is built from 192 individual components and offers 48-hour power reserve. The 42mm-wide case is water resistant to 30 meters.
Finally, the Panthère Joueuse de Cartier is the latest in a series of Cartier’s SIHH novelties. This exquisite timepiece, aimed at the ladies of refined taste, offers yet another interpretation of Cartier’s timeless icon – the panther. The symbol of fierce femininity, which occupies the central portion of the dial, appears to jump from the dial while chasing a ball. What is immediately noticeable is that there are no hours or minutes hands, nor any indices whatsoever. A diamond-set paw, which extends to grab the ball, is actually a minutes indicator, while the hour is represented by the diamond-set ball the panther is chasing around. 255 diamonds were needed to create this feline symbol.
The case, same as the ball and the panther, is made from 18k white gold. It measures 40mm in diameter and houses the in-house self-winding movement caliber 9918 MC with 48-hour power reserve. This amazing model is set with 320 diamonds and fitted with a white alligator strap. In addition, the Panthère Joueuse de Cartier is also available in white gold with a diamond paved bezel, dial, and bracelet. - Cartier.
