Earlier this year, at SIHH 2012, A. Lange & Söhne presented the brand new Lange 1 Tourbillon Perpetual Calendar as a counterargument to the end of the world that will occur on 21 December 2012, as predicted by some interpreters of the Mayan calendar.
According to the Mayas, the 400-year cycle of the calender closes on 21 December 2012, when, judging by some eschatological beliefs, the major cataclysmic or transformative events will take place. A. Lange & Sohne has decided to mark the beginning of a new epoch with an innovative tourbillon fitted with a perpetual calendar, and symbolically mark the start of time in which the world of watchmaking will undergo a positive transformation.
A. LANGE & SÖHNE - Lange 1 Tourbillon Perpetual Calendar is aimed at all those who look to the future with comfort and convenience, and would appreciate having an accurate calendar that will not have to be corrected until the year 2100.

Even though the inspiration for this piece may seem rather exotic, A. LANGE & SÖHNE was founded in 1845 in the town of Glashütte, near Dresden, in the eastern state of Saxony - and this is exactly where the only the only publicly accessible authentic examples of the three existing manuscripts of the Maya Codex is kept - in the Saxon State and University Library. The other two are held in Paris and Madrid.
As for the watch, the month indicator is here, for the first time, displayed as a peripheral ring that circles around the dial. The tiny arrow, positioned at the lower part of the dial, indicates the current month on the very first rotating peripheral ring, while the aperture positioned just above it indicates the leap year. The left side of the dial is reserved for the day of the week indicator, while the double window at 11 o'clock shows the current date. Day and night indicator is nested inside the off-centered hours/minutes sub-dial, while the moon phase indicator shares the same space with the subsidiary seconds sub-counter.

The watch is crafted in either platinum or pink gold and it measures 41.9mm in diameter. Inside is the in-house automatic movement Lange caliber L082.1. The movement is generously finished and it features a centrally mounted solid gold and platinum rotor, as well as the hand-engraved double balance cocks. The platinum version is limited to 100 pieces, while the pink gold version is non-limited.
