SIHH 2013 Preview: Cartier Ballon Bleu de Cartier Tourbillon Double Jumping Second Time Zone

Today I’m giving you the first look at Cartier’s new Ballon Bleu de Cartier Tourbillon Double Jumping Second Time Zone, a watch that is going to be officially unveiled at SIHH 2013 exhibition, in January next year. In a couple of recent articles dedicated to SIHH previews, have already announced Rotonde de Cartier Perpetual Calendar Chronograph, the extraordinary Rotonde de Cartier with Panther Granulation and Cartier’s new Calibre Chronograph. Now it’s time to meet the new regulator watch from Cartier.

Cartier Ballon Bleu de Cartier Tourbillon Double Jumping Second Time Zone features a regulator display complication with a minute hand in the center and two jumping-hour counters. This is very original and quite unique traveler’s timepiece where of the regulator counters indicates the home time, while the second one shows the local time. The dial of this watch is partially open worked and it reveals the splendor and the complexity of the movement even from the watch face. A simple glance at a dial reveals a swarm of opposites, beautifully arranged into harmonious composition: Roman and Arabic numerals, polished and brushed surfaces, classic elegance and avant-garde design.

Cartier’s new piece will be available in a 50-piece limited edition and two variations – crafted in white gold or crafted in pink gold. Both versions are presented in a robust 46mm-wide case and powered by the in-house Cartier Caliber 9456 MC. This exquisite movement is manually wound and stamped with Geneva Seal. The most beautiful detail is certainly a flying tourbillon, shown at 6 o’clock position, with its bridges shaped like letter „C“ - for Cartier.

The discrete pusher, located at 10 o’clock, is used to adjust the second time zone indicator. The crown, placed at it’s traditional 3 o’clock position, is set with a sapphire cabochon. Both versions of the watch are mounted on leather straps – black for the white gold, and brown for pink gold. The movement beats at 21 600 vibrations per hour and it provides 50 hours of power reserve.

Its case is both square and rectangle, and its strap is seamlessly integrated into vertical sidebars called "brancards," representing tank treads. The Tank was introduced in 1918, and during the next year, only six pieces watches were produced. Since its design is...
