Al Pacino received the Jaeger-Le Coultre Glory to the Filmmaker! 2011 award, which is one of the most prestigious prizes of the Venice International Film Festival.
The prize is first introduced in 2007, and named after the Japanese movie Glory to the Filmmaker! written, directed, edited by the film's lead star Takeshi Kitano. Kitano was also the first recipient of the Glory to the Filmmaker! award, a prize dedicated to an artist who has left an original mark on contemporary cinema. The honor was given out Sept 4, during the 68th Venice International Film Festival, which runs Aug. 31 through Sept. 10. This prize was previously awarded to Takeshi Kitano (2007), Abbas Kiarostami (2008), Agnès Varda (2008), Sylvester Stallone (2009) and Mani Ratnam (2010).
Festival director Marco Mueller described Pacino as "an amazing director, whose experience is precious and original and enriches the world of contemporary film." The award ceremony was followed by the world premiere of Pacino's third feature-length directorial picture, Wilde Salome. The movie, which is going to be released this fall, is based on Oscar Wilde’s play, the biblical tale of Salome and King Herod which explores the destructive use of sexuality. Pacino, however, said his future was "blank" and criticised his latest directorial effort: "I didn't know where I was going, I'm confused.” “The Godfather” star is both a creator and a protagonist of the movie: he documents the challenges of making the film, while playing himself, he plays King Herod and also, in one scene, Oscar Wilde. “I don’t think I covered enough of Wilde’s personality. He was a provocateur with a superior mind – a rare person and a great artist,” he said.
The 71-year old, turned up to the press conference in a white silk shirt with several buttons undone wearing a Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Compressor Diving Automatic Navy Seals watch. This watch is released in 2010, as a basic three-hand model. The watch is made of stainless steel, it boasts 42 millimeters in diameter, and utilizes in-house made Jaeger-LeCoultre automatic mechanical caliber 899 movement. The watch is water resistant to 300 meters and a part of a limited edition series of the Master Compressor Diving Automatic Navy SEALs watch.
