Louis Moinet Qatar Tourbillon

Marina Milojević | 03.06.14 | 04:41 AM

Louis Moinet presents its new Qatar Tourbillon, which has been officially unveiled the 2014 Doha Jewelry and Watches Exhibition.

Louis Moinet Qatar Tourbillon will be on display also at BaselWorld 2014, and the brand has just sent out the official press release, announcing the start of Louis Moinet’s partnership with Al Fardan. Louis Moinet Qatar Tourbillon is an exquisite new watch that features two fragments of the one and only meteorite ever found in Qatar. It’s astonishing hand-made dial depicts two bent swords and sand dunes, evoking the coat of arms of Qatar. Same as all other members of the Extraordinary Pieces – Metheoris Collection, the Louis Moinet Qatar Tourbillon features a rare piece of a rocky body that fell on to the Earth's surface from outer space.

The meteorite used for this dial is officially named Qatar 001, and it originates from the asteroid belt located amongst the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. Qatar 001, therefore, journeyed more than 260 million kilometers through the space, before falling in the area of Jariyan al Batnah. The rock is described as a Chondrite type H5, highly saturated in metals and showing visible spheroidal mineral grains.

What makes this watch very unique is that it uses a single meteorite that has ever been found in Qatar. The hand-made dial features a hand-engraved applique around its periphery, which depicts the sand dunes and two Qatari bent swords. The backdrop is made from one of the oldest known fossils on earth - three-billion-year-old red stromatolite rock, which occupies the central portion of the dial. The tourbillon is located at 6 o’clock, while the openworked segment at 12 o’clock reveals the mainspring.

Louis Moinet Qatar Tourbillon is crafted from white gold and it measures 47 mm in diameter. The watch is powered by a manually - wound mechanism, which beats at 21,600 vph and provides 72 hours of power reserve. The rotating tourbillon cage completes one full rotation in 60 seconds, and helps to maximize the timekeeping precision. The case-back is fitted with a sapphire crystal, which reveals the “octopus spring” of the winding and setting mechanism. This device combines three springs in one – pull-out piece spring, lever spring, and click spring, which radiate from the same central point, like the legs of an octopus.

The Qatar Tourbillon is available in an exclusive limited edition of 12 pieces. The watch is delivered on a black Louisiana alligator leather strap with 18K white gold & black titanium folding clasp. The presentation box also includes Louis Moinet Book and a hand-written warranty. Louis Moinet Qatar Tourbillon is referenced as LM-14.70.21.
