OMEGA Seamaster Planet Ocean Ultra Deep Professional is The Deepest Diving Watch Ever

Marina Milojević | 06.26.19 | 11:56 PM

In May this year, OMEGA set the new world record, as its Seamaster Planet Ocean Ultra Deep Professional became the world’s deepest watch! This amazing timepiece accompanied a businessman and adventurer Victor Vescovo, on his venture to break the world record for the deepest dive in history. Vescovio, who had also climbed the highest points on all seven continents, journeyed 10,927 meters (35,853 feet) to the bottom of the Challenger Deep, as part of a mission to chart the world's deepest underwater places. As a part of his self-funded Five Deeps expedition, Vescovo has already conquered the deepest points of four of the world’s oceans. The remaining one is in the Arctic Ocean, and Vescovo plans to conquer it in August this year.

OMEGA Seamaster Planet Ocean Ultra Deep Professional

The Seamaster Planet Ocean Ultra Deep Professional is a dive watch like no other. Designed to meet all the challenging demands of The Five Deeps Expedition - a watch able to survive a descent to nearly 11,000 meters or 36,000 feet, and 8 tons per square inch of water pressure. The watch is crafted from grade 5 titanium, sourced from the alloy used in the production of the pressure hull of Vescovo’s manned deep-sea submarine named Limiting Factor. The sandblasted case, measuring 55mm in diameter and 28mm in height, features a matte grey finish and a matching rotating bezel and a dial that are also made from titanium.

This surprisingly slender divers’ watch manages to maintain an exceptional level of water resistance. Like two other OMEGA Ultra Deep watches, it had been tested to a simulated depth of 15,000 meters. The other side of the case reveals the expedition logo located at the center of the titanium medallion, inside concentric circles recalling the Multi Beam sonar technology. The rim of the case-back is engraved with relevant information such as the model, reference number, materials, DNV-GL certification, and the words - tested 15,000m / 49,212ft.

To secure the sapphire crystal from the ingress of water, omega has turned to the Limiting Factor once again. The inspiration was taken from its viewpoints. Their load bearing surface has been designed to minimize the pressure on the inside edges of the cone, where the pressure is highest. To spread the stress distribution, OMEGA used Liquidmetal to ensure a firm and flexible sapphire-to-case assembly. This innovative patent-pending hot form bonding made it possible to avoid the use of polymer seals and to reduce the sapphire’s thickness.

Having passed the Triton tests and proven their worth at the deepest place on the planet, OMEGA Seamaster Planet Ocean Ultra Deep Professional watches were then subjected to the METAS testing, which is considered the highest level of challenge in the watch industry, and achieved Master Chronometer certification.

OMEGA Seamaster Planet Ocean Ultra Deep Professional

The world’s deepest watch is produced exclusively for the Five Deeps Expedition. Even though the goal was to create a watch for a risky mission, OMEGA employed cutting-edge technologies and materials that could be adapted to dive watch manufacturing in the future.
