Patek Philippe Annual Calendar Ref. 5396

Marina Milojević | 04.08.16 | 04:11 AM

For the house of Patek Philippe, BaselWorld 2016 was a perfect occasion to present a new commemorative model that celebrates the 20th anniversary of the patented Annual Calendar.

The new Annual Calendar Ref. 5396 is a special sequel to the highly successful series that began in Basel in 1996 with the Ref. 5035. The same reference was voted Watch of the Year only a couple of months after its debut at BaselWorld. Since 1996, the Annual Calendar has been rendered in 21 different versions, including jewelry editions aimed at the ladies. The new Patek Philippe Annual Calendar Ref. 5396 is the 22nd model in the Annual Calendar range.

Annual Calendar complication elegantly bridges the gap between a simple calendar and the perpetual calendar. Its main advantage, in comparison to the simple calendar, the ability to automatically differentiate between 30- and 31-day months, and only needs to be adjusted at the transition from February to March. This practical and user-friendly complication is now issued in a commemorative edition, which is not limited, but subtly reworked and refined. The Annual Calendar Ref. 5396 complements the 21 previous models, while at the same time appearing to be completely new.

The Patek Philippe Annual Calendar Ref. 5396 retains all of the year-established style elements such as the Calatrava case-shape, the archetype of all classic round watches. On the new model, the case merges with the strap lugs, and melts with a smooth polished bezel. The sapphire glass is slightly chambered to emphasize the volume and add a distinctive modern touch.

The main elements of the watch face have been subtly recombined on the dial. A double aperture in the upper portion displays day of the week on the left, and month on the right. The date display is located at 6 o’clock position, and placed inside a large aperture. Just above it is the 24-hour sub-dial with its day and night indication, while the time is indicated in a classic manner, using the centrally positioned hands. Small markers on the minute track, as well as the sculpted Breguet numerals, are made from 18-karat gold, and paired with the Dauphine-style hour and minute hands and the long, slender sweep seconds hand.

Patek Philippe Annual Calendar Ref. 5396 is powered by the self-winding mechanical movement caliber 324 S QA LU 24H, which is visible through the sapphire-crystal case back. The mechanism is adorned with a large rotor in 18-karat yellow gold with Calatrava cross. Rhodiumed bridges have been decorated with Côtes de Genève, round-chamfered edges and gold-filled engravings. The movement, which is assembled from 347 components and 34 jewels, beats at a frequency of 28,800 semi-oscillations per hour. It provides up to 45 hours of power reserve, and guarantees rate deviations within -3 and +2 seconds per day.

Patek Philippe Annual Calendar Ref. 5396 is offered in two different versions. The rose gold version (Ref. 5396R) is paired with a silvery opaline dial, and mounted on a chocolate brown alligator strap. The white gold (Ref. 5396G) version features a distinctively technical look, with a dark galvanic gray dial featuring a sunburst finish, and a matt black alligator strap. Both executions are priced at $47,970.

In 2016, Patek Phillippe celebrates the 40th anniversary of its Nautilus watch collection. As it is customary to do, the renowned Swiss watchmaker pays tribute to its elegant Nautilus with two limited edition Nautilus 40th Anniversary models: a classic three-hander, and a chronograph.

The legendary Nautilus made its debut in 1976. This timelessly contemporary model, designed in close collaboration with Gérald Genta, one of the most renowned watch designers of the past century, will be remembered as the first sports watch in the long history of Patek Philippe manufacture. The Nautilus caused something like a small revolution in watchmaking. It was a completely unusual timepiece, one unlike any seen in the industry for that matter. While most of the watches of the era were slender timepieces made of gold, Nautilus boasted a vo...
