For BaselWorld 2016, the last family-owned independent Genevan watch manufacturer Patek Philippe is presenting four new models. Among them is the new model in the regular collection that unites two highly popular watch complications – the new Patek Philippe World Time Chronograph Ref. 5930.
This extraordinary model combines Patek Philippe’s patented World Time mechanism with a proprietary self-winding chronograph movement. This rare combination of two of Patek Philippe’s specialties is aimed at true collectors and aficionados, who will most certainly appreciate it. So far, the union of the world time complication and a chronograph has appeared only in a single Patek from the 1940’s.
Until today, the only Patek Philippe World Time Chronograph is a one-of-a-kind wristwatch No. 862 442, from 1940. This historical timepiece now rests in the Patek Philippe Museum, with inventory number P996. It is believed that this watch, equipped with both pulsimeter and asthmomether scales, once belonged to a physician.
The new reference 5930G demonstrates how both the World Time watch and the chronograph have made significant progress since 1940. The mechanisms are now both more precise and more complex, which makes it even more challenging to integrate them into a single movement. Even on the dial side, the watchmakers had to envision a completely new watch face that embraces all of the unique features of both complications. For example, a classic world time watch doesn’t have a second hand, but the chronograph necessitates a long second hand and a 30-minute counter. Similarly, where conventional chronograph has a graduated scale graduated in fractions of a second, the World Time Chronograph has a moving city disk with representations of 24 international time zones.
With the new mechanical CH 28-520 HU movement, Patek Philippe combined two proven mechanisms: the self-winding CH 28-520 PS chronograph caliber with column-wheel control and a vertical clutch, and the renowned World Time module based on a model developed by Genevan watchmaker Louis Cottier in the 1930s.Both elements were further enhanced with extensive modifications: axes were shifted, bridges redesigned and thinned, and components clearances changed. The chronograph has a start/stop pusher at 2 o'clock, and a reset pusher at 4 o'clock that also doubles as a flyback pusher.
The world time function is very intuitive. The hour and minute hands indicate the time in the city whose name is shown at 12 o’clock. The time in the remaining 23 world zones can be determined by the city disk and the two-colored 24-hour ring, which indicates whether it is day or night in the respective city. Whenever the wearer presses the corrector button at 10 o’clock, the city disk will advance, and the 24-hour ring will move counterclockwise in one-hour increments.
The new Patek Philippe World Time Chronograph, reference 5930G, is presented in a classic round case in 18-karat white gold. The case is fitted with a sapphire crystal case-back that reveals the beauty and finish of the movement. The self-winding mechanical movement, Caliber CH 28-520 HU, beats at a frequency of 28,800 semi-oscillations per hour, and provides up to 55 hours of power reserve.
The new Patek Philippe World Time Chronograph Ref. 5930G launches in 2016 in a version with a blue, hand-guillochéd dial center. The watch is mounted on a hand-stitched matt navy blue alligator strap with large square scales. The price for the new Patek Philippe World Time Chronograph 5930G will be $73,700.
