At BaselWorld 2018, Patek Philippe introduced a special new version of its cult Golden Ellipse model, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. To mark the special occasion, Patek Philippe created a limited edition series of 100 anniversary sets, each consisting of a limited edition platinum model and matching cufflinks. In addition, the famous Swiss watchmaker extends the collection with a new (non-limited) Golden Ellipse Jumbo in rose gold with a black dial.
Patek Philippe Golden Ellipse 50th anniversary model
Patek Philippe Golden Ellipse Jumbo 50th anniversary model
The Golden Ellipse is the second oldest watch in the Patek Philippe lineup, just after the famous Calatrava from 1932. The model, originating from the 1968, is distinguished by its timelessly elegant elliptical case, a union of a circle and a rectangle. One of the manufacture’s most symbolic designs, the beautifully balanced Golden Ellipse, is created with the golden ratio in mind. On the occasion of the 50th anniversary, the collection welcomes two new versions of the cult classic.
The limited edition Golden Ellipse 50th anniversary model (reference 5738/50P-001) is a fusion of rare handcrafts, including engraving and enamel arts, and timeless elegance. The watch features a black enamel dial adorned with a volute pattern manually engraved on the 18K white-gold plate. The central motif is evocative of Patek Philippe’s signature Calatrava cross, while the hours and minutes are indicated with cheveu hands in satin-finished white gold.
The watch case, crafted from pure platinum, reveals a solid case-back, punctuated by the engraving “Ellipse d’Or 1968–2018”. The crown is set with an onyx cabochon, while the caseband features a diamond set at 6 o’clock.
The limited edition Golden Ellipse model is equipped with the ultra-thin self-winding caliber 240 movement, and mounted on a black hand-stitched alligator strap. The piece is presented in a box with white-gold cuff links featuring the exclusive Golden Ellipse design.
Patek Philippe Golden Ellipse Jumbo (reference 5738R-001) is a follow up to the grand-taille 40th anniversary model in platinum, launched back in 2008. The iconic design is now revisited as a new grand-taille version in rose gold, measuring 34 x 39.5 mm. The warm hue of the case is paired with a black ebony sunburst dial graced with applied hour markers and cheveu hands in rose gold. A single black onyx cabochon is set in the winding crown.
The Golden Ellipse Jumbo is powered by the self-winding caliber 240 movement with an off-center 22K gold minirotor completely recessed in the bridge plane. The case back is solid rose-gold, while the hand-stitched black strap is made of alligator leather. Patek Philippe has also created cuff links in rose gold with sunburst ebony black inlays to match the exclusive Golden Ellipse design. The watch retails for CHF 27,200.
