In 2016, Patek Phillippe celebrates the 40th anniversary of its Nautilus watch collection. As it is customary to do, the renowned Swiss watchmaker pays tribute to its elegant Nautilus with two limited edition Nautilus 40th Anniversary models: a classic three-hander, and a chronograph.
The legendary Nautilus made its debut in 1976. This timelessly contemporary model, designed in close collaboration with Gérald Genta, one of the most renowned watch designers of the past century, will be remembered as the first sports watch in the long history of Patek Philippe manufacture. The Nautilus caused something like a small revolution in watchmaking. It was a completely unusual timepiece, one unlike any seen in the industry for that matter. While most of the watches of the era were slender timepieces made of gold, Nautilus boasted a voluminous profile, and it was made from stainless steel. Nevertheless, the watch was water resistant to 120 meters, which was more than unusual at the time.
Two lateral case extension ridges at 9 and 3 o'clock, preventing the ingress of water, were inspired by the locking mechanism of ocean liner portholes. The sapphire crystal was framed by an octagonal bezel with curved sides and round corners, while the steel bracelet featured the alternating matte/polished motif. The dial of the first Nautilus was painted in a blue-tint charcoal and adorned with a horizontal embossed pattern, which still remains one of the most emblematic features of the collection.
The limited edition Nautilus models launched on the occasion of the 40th anniversary have also been modeled after the Patek Philippe's first Nautilus watch family. The Ref. 5711/1P pays tribute to the original Nautilus Ref. 3700/1A "Jumbo" from 1976, while Nautilus flyback chronograph Ref. 5976/1G acknowledges the 30th anniversary collection introduced in 2006. Both models feature a blue dial with diamond hour markers, Nautilus embossed motif, and a recessed anniversary insignia.
Patek Philippe Nautilus Ref. 5711/1P 40th Anniversary Limited Edition, a watch reminiscent of the original Nautilus, is issued in a limited edition of 700 individually numbered pieces crafted from platinum. This rather large watch measures 44mm in diameter, and its 3-part case and bracelet have been decorated using chamfering, satin-finishing, sandblasting, and mirror polishing. The case is fitted with a single white Top Wesselton diamond (approx. 0.02 ct.) on the bezel above the lugs at 6 o'clock.
The dial of the Nautilus Ref. 5711/1P is made of 18-karat gold and it features a dark blue hue with subtle gradation from the inside to the outside. It also reveals 12 applied batons in 18K white gold, set with baguette diamonds measuring approximately 0.34 ct. The lower portion of the dial features a two-line anniversary citation, while a date aperture appears at 3 o’clock position. The baton-style hours and minutes hands are counterbalanced by the seconds hand.
The exclusive new Patek Philippe Nautilus Ref. 5711/1P 40th Anniversary Limited Edition is powered by the self-winding caliber 324 S C movement, which is fitted with the Gyromax® balance with the Spiromax® balance spring. Its finely decorated movement is visible through the sapphire-crystal case back. The finishes, executed mainly by hand include Geneva striping for the bridges, chamfering and polishing for the edges, polishing for the sinks, circular graining for the gold rotor, perlage for the plate, and gold-filled engravings. The watch is delivered in an anniversary box made of brown natural cork, an authentic replica of the 1976 original. The steel plate placed on the front side display the Nautilus logo in cursive and the Patek Philippe Geneva insignia. The price for the Patek Philippe Nautilus 40th Anniversary 5711/1P in platinum is $113,400 USD.
The second anniversary model to commemorate the 40th birthday of the collection is the Nautilus Chronograph Ref. 5976/1G 40th Anniversary Limited Edition, a self-winding flyback chronograph in white gold. The watch is modeled after the first Nautilus chronograph that was introduced in 2006 to mark the 30th anniversary of the Nautilus range. The watch comes in a limited edition of 1300 pieces, and with amazingly large new format, measuring no less than 49.25 mm in width. The watch is 3.6 mm wider than the predecessor model, and the legibility of its chronograph functions is further optimized.
The larger format of the watch and gives more space for the enlarged date aperture and the oversized monocounter at 6 o’clock that shows the results of short-time measurements. Its three concentric scales include the 12-hour counter on the outside, the minute counters from 1 to 30 in the middle and from 31 to 60 on the outside. The dial also reveals applied hour markers set with baguette and princess-cut diamonds, and the emblematic horizontal embossed pattern. The upper portion of the dial is reserved for the special anniversary citation "1976 – 40 – 2016".
The Nautilus Chronograph Ref. 5976/1G 40th Anniversary Limited Edition is powered by the in-house chronograph movement CH 28-520 C with start/stop and flyback/reset chronograph functions. The watch is endowed with a sapphire crystal case-back which allows the wearer to admire the elaborate finishes on the micromechanical movement: the gold rotor and bridges with Geneva circular graining, chamfered and polished edges, polished bores and gold-filled engravings with blued screws and ruby-red jewels. The watch is delivered in the same anniversary box as the Nautilus Ref. 5711/1P. In both cases, the box also contains the Certificate of Origin and an anniversary document. The new Patek Philippe Nautilus 40th Anniversary 5976/1G in white gold is priced at $96,390 USD.
