To celebrate its 175th anniversary, Patek Philippe presents the special anniversary collection, which comprises four luxurious models designed to pay a tribute to the long-lasting craftsmanship and expertise of the brand. The collection ranges from more affordable chronographs and world time models, all the way up to the brand’s first hour striker watch and the amazing Grandmaster Chime grand complication timepiece: the Multi-Scale Chronograph (ref. 5975, ref. 4675), the World Time Moon (ref. 5575, ref. 7175), the Chiming Jump Hour (ref. 5275), and the Grandmaster Chime (ref. 5175R).
Today we’re going to take a look at the charming Patek Philippe Chiming Jump Hour ref. 5275, which brings us the experience of resonant time in a triple jump. The watch is inspired by the iconic Ref. 3969 with a jumping digital hour, which was designed in 1989, to celebrate the Patek Philippe's 150th anniversary. The new commemorative timepiece is one of the finest and most elegant watches ever produced by Patek. It arrives in a classic tonneau-shaped case, which is made of platinum and sealed with a dedicatory medallion with the engraving featuring the brand’s insignia and the inscription “PATEK PHILIPPE GENEVE 175e Anniversaire 1839 – 2014.”
The special manually-wound mechanical movement Caliber 32-650 HGS PS is ticking inside, and driving three jumping indications with an acoustic indication at the top of every hour.
The watch is fitted with an elegant gold dial graced with the floral motif. Same as the margin and the minute circle of the dial, its flanks are ornamented with elaborate engravings of floral motifs. The small seconds counter appears at 6 o’clock position, the hour is indicated via the digital display in the aperture at 12 o’clock, while the minute hand travels around the off-centered minute dial. Once the digital display jumps to the new hour, a soft tone can be heard, since the Chiming Jump Hour watch also indicates each new hour segment acoustically. The seconds sub-dial has a black railway track scale, black Arabic numerals, and a black nickel-plated Breguet-style hand, while the minute dial features black Arabic numerals and black minute index dots.

The jumping time indications in this watch, performed by a mechanical triad of indications, are synchronized with the movements of the balance, which performs 8 semi-oscillations per second. What makes the Chiming Jump Hour different from conventional mechanical watches is that the energy from the balance is not directly transferred to the seconds hand. Instead, the energy is stored in a storage mechanism that releases it to the fourth wheel only when the eighth semi-oscillation takes place. In the same manner, the power stored during 60 seconds-interval is delivered to the minute hand instantaneously, and the same thing happens every 60 minutes, when the digital display jumps to the new hour.

Since the hour disk is heavier than an hour hand, and since it also engages a striking hammer for acoustic indication, this watch with three jumping indications requires more power to move, and demands a special new caliber that could not only accumulate the energy required for the jumping indications but would also coordinate the jumps of the seconds, minutes, and hours with great precision. The new three-patent manually wound caliber 32-650 HGS PS movement was therefore designed specifically for this model. It is built from 438 individual components and 75 jewels. The movement beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour, and provides a minimum of 48 hours of power reserve (max. 53 hours). A special slide, positioned in the case flank at 10 o’clock, can be used to engage or disengage the hamper, thus enabling or disabling the automatic hour strike, and helping to extend the use power on reserve.

The Patek Philippe Chiming Jump Hour Ref. 5275 is produced in a limited anniversary edition of 175 pieces. The watch is mounted on a shiny alligator strap secured with a platinum fold-over clasp. The clasp is engraved with the inscription “PATEK PHILIPPE 1839 – 2014” and it features the brand’s emblematic Calatrava cross in the middle. The Patek Philippe Chiming Jump Hour Ref. 5275 is priced at CHF 310,000.
