SIHH 2014 | Cartier the Rotonde de Cartier Astrocalendaire

Marina Milojević | 01.19.14 | 06:35 AM

Tomorrow, at SIHH 2014 exhibition, Cartier will officially unveil its Rotonde de Cartier Astrocalendaire, a new perpetual calendar tourbillon.

Cartier Rotonde de Cartier Astrocalendaire is an innovative masterpiece that uses a completely new revolutionary design to combine and show both the tourbillon and the perpetual calendar complications on a small surface of the dial. Cartier has adopted the completely new approach in creating this unique dial that is designed as an amphitheater. The center, or the stage, is reserved for a glorious tourbillon, while the disks for twelve months, seven days, the date and the year, radiate from the midpoint in just a few centimeters in diameter. The three-dimensional display is arranged concentrically, as the perpetual calendar function appears on several levels, starting with the day of the week, followed by the month, and closed by the date disc.

The calendar readings are possible thanks to the rotating apertures, or mall blue windows that turn gradually as the calendar indicators advance. The leap year indicator is placed on the back of the watch.

Cartier the Rotonde de Cartier Astrocalendaire is crafted from platinum and it measures 45mm in diameter. It runs on Manufacture’s self-winding Calibre 9459 MC, which uses gears instead of levers to control the main functions of the watch. This allows the wearer to set the watch in both directions, improves the durability of the movement, and lessens the risks of breaking. The movement is made from 382 components, and its core is what Cartier calls “the Brain” – a cluster of densely nested gears. This mechanism beats at 21,600 alternations per hour and provides around 50 hours of power reserve.

Cartier the Rotonde de Cartier Astrocalendaire is mounted on a black alligator strap and it is sealed against the ingress of water to up to 30 meters. The watch is issued in a numbered limited edition of 100 exemplars, and is priced at 150,000 EUR apiece.

The year 2017 marks the 100th anniversary of Cartier Tank, a watch invented by Louis Cartier (a grandson of Cartier’s founder Louis-François Cartier) back in 1917. The unique design of this watch is inspired by  Renault military tanks, which Cartier saw in use on the Western Front. Its case is both square and rectangle, and its strap is seamlessly integrated into vertical sidebars called "brancards," representing tank treads. The Tank was introduced in 1918, and during the next year, only six pieces watches were produced. Since its design is...

In just a couple weeks, at the SIHH 2017 exhibition in Genève, the house of Cartier will present yet another of its exceptional Métiers d’Art creations. The famous Swiss Maison, known for exploration and preservation of ancient and traditional decorative techniques, has now turned to the technique of heat bluing. Blued steel is something that we often see in fine watchmaking. Steel screws used in watch movements are often blue, so are the hands.
