The manufacture of Frederique Constant celebrates the year of the goat with its new masterpiece: the Manufacture Zodiac 24H limited edition.
Frederique Constant Manufacture Zodiac 24H limited edition is inspired by time measurements of ancient Chinese people, who had a Chinese era calendar system, where each day is divided into 12 equal periods, each represented by one of the Chinese zodiac signs. The rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog and pig, are called the twelve terrestrial branches, each equivalent to two hour period. The terrestrial branches, again, are divided into eight even quarters, each 15 minutes long (original quarter, original first quarter, original second quarter, original third quarter, positive quarter, positive first quarter, positive second quarter and positive third quarter).
The twelve two-hour cycles were represented by different animals also to remind people to reasonably arrange their daily tasks and rest, and improve their health and chances for a long life. As the Frederique Constant illustrates the Chinese Plain Questions Ancient Health Theory: “the period of the day from 5 a.m. to 7 a.m, represented by the rabbit, is just the time for the Jade Rabbit to smash herbal medicine, implying people should get up to work. The period of the day from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m, represented by the goat, is the time for the goat to build up its strength; implying ancient people had lunch at about this period. The period of the day from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m., represented by the pig, is the time for the pig to sleep soundly, and all is quiet, so it is the time to go to bed.” (Official press release)

- Rat: 11 p.m. to 1 a.m. is the time rats actively seek food.
- Ox: 1 to 3 a.m. is the time that oxen ruminate.
- Tiger: 3 to 5 a.m. is when tigers hunt prey.
- Rabbit: 5 to 7 a.m. is when a jade rabbit pounds herbs.
- Dragon: 7 to 9 a.m. is when dragons hover in the sky and give people rainfall.
- Snake: 9 to 11 a.m. is when snakes start to leave their burrows.
- Horse: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. is when a horse is vigorous.
- Goat: 1 to 3 p.m.is when sheep eat grass and become stronger.
- Monkey: 3 to 5 p.m. is when monkeys become lively.
- Rooster: 5 to 7 p.m. is when roosters return to their roost as it is dark
- Dog: 7 to 9 p.m. is when dogs begin to carry out their duty to guard entrances.
- Pig: 9 to 11 p.m. is when all is quiet and pigs are sleeping soundly.
The Manufacture Zodiac 24H limited edition welcomes of the year of goat in 2015, with the position of the six o’clock marked the “year of goat”, and all Chinese characters showed in small seal script. The watch is inspired by an Antique, non-branded pocket watch from 1930s, with Chinese time indications. Unlike standard contemporary timepieces, this is a 24-hour watch, in which an hour hand completes one full rotation in 24 hours, while the minute hand turns a circle in 120 minutes. The numerals on the dial are replaced with the twelve terrestrial branches, while the outer ring is divided into eight scales (quarters).
To make it more user friendly, the Frederique Constant has marked the innermost circle of the dial with Arabic numerals (the GMT indicator). The watch is available in either stainless steel or polished rose gold plated steel variants (40.5 mm in diameter), each limited to 888 exemplars. The watch utilizes the in-house movement Frederique Constant FC-724 caliber finished in the spirit of haute horlogerie, with perlage and circular Côtes de Genève pattern. It also incorporates 26 gems. The movement promises 42 hours of power reserve and about 30m of water resistance.
It might be interesting to mention that the manufacture of Frederique Constant rejected the idea of making Chinese editions with dragon, horses, or goats on, because this concept doesn’t fit the brand identity – it is not classical. The edition will be available all over the world, and not exclusively for the Asian market.
