At BaselWorld 2014, Omega will unveil its new Speedmaster Mark II, which is a contemporary version of the historic Speedmaster Mark (Mk) II model from 1969.
The original Speedmaster Mark II was launched back in 1969, which is one of the most important years in the history of this Swiss luxury brand. This is the year in which OMEGA also made a couple of its most epic timepieces for NASA, and a year in which Omega’s Speedmaster Professional Chronograph became the first watch on the Moon. The original Mark II was launched the same year, as an update to the existing Speedmaster collection. In comparison to the historical Speedmaster range, the genuine Mark II had a completely reinvented, modernized case, but it was powered by the same hand-wound Calibre 861 that drove the famous Moonwatch.
In 2014, on the occasion of BaselWorld trade show, Omega will reintroduce the Speedmaster Mark II, which looks almost exactly like its epic predecessor, apart from the automatic mechanical movement and an innovative tachymeter scale. The new Omega Speedmaster Mark II arrives in a retro-styled tonneau-shaped case that is made from brush-finished stainless steel. The pushers and the crown are nicely polished, while the bracelet features brushed links.
The newly introduced tachymetric scale is glowing in the dark thanks to the aluminum ring coated with Super-LumiNova. The numerals of the tachymetric scale are cut into the aluminum ring, which is pressed on top of the luminous bottom disk. As you can see, this looks really good, while adding some depth and dimension to numerals.
This is an early preview so we do not know all of the details yet. At this point, I can only say that Omega Speedmaster Mark II will be available with black and grey dial. The grey version is highlighted with vibrant orange center chronograph seconds hand and upbeat hour markers, while the black version features more traditional Speedmaster look.
The movement used for the new Omega Speedmaster Mark II watches is COSC-certified Co-Axial Calibre 3330 automatic, which features a silicon balance spring and a column-wheel chronograph mechanism. The mechanism - developed to offer greater precision, stability and durability - runs on a 52-hour power reserve.
The new Omega Speedmaster Mark II for 2014 will be available after the BaselWorld exhibition, which starts on 27th of March. Omega Speedmaster Mark II watches are priced at $6,250.
