In 2017, Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH 2017) broadens its horizons with the inauguration of new brands and a day open to the public. Girard Perregaux returns for the 27th edition of the world’s most important watch event, while the house of Ulysse Nardin makes its debut. In addition, five independent brands will also join the Carré des Horlogers.
Over the last couple of weeks, we offered you a sneak peek at some of the most important watches that will be revealed in January, in Geneve. Yesterday, we had our first look at Roger Dubuis Excalibur Quatuor Cobalt Micro-Melt. In September we took a glimpse at Vacheron Constantin’s new creations: the Traditionnelle Minute Repeater Tourbillon, and Patrimony Moon Phase and Retrograde Date. Today, we present two of the Panerai’s new special editions that will be unveiled at the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH 2017) Panerai Radiomir 3 Days Acciaio, PAM 685 and PAM 687.
Both new references are vintage-spirited stainless steel watches that pay homage to one of Panerai’s historical references - the Type A ref. 3646. The legendary Type A was supplied for the officers of the Italian Navy, who required a timepiece reliable enough to withstand immersion in water. The model was in production until the 1950s, and it came in numerous versions, classified Type A to Type G, each bearing unique aesthetics. However, Panerai didn’t make its own waterproof cases. The brand actually obtained both case and the movement from Rolex, who already held a patent on a waterproof watch case. However, meet the military needs of Regia Marina, Panerai created Radiomir, a radium- based powder that gives luminosity to the dials.
Two new references, both faithful replicas of the original model, feature a dodecagon bezel engraved with the inscription “OFFICINE PANERAI – BREVETTATO,” which refers to the Panerai’s patented (brevettato means patented) luminous material used on the dial of the historical model. For the same reason, the creamy-brown dial of the PAM 687 features a gradually faded color that mimics the effects of the radioactive radium material that was once used to create the luminescent dials of the ref. 3646. The other version has a deep black dial, which is more common for Panerai.
The large, stainless steel cases of these new models measures 47mm in diameter, accommodating the Panerai P.3000 manual winding calibre, which is created entirely at the Panerai Manufacture. The manually-wound caliber provides indications for hours and minutes, coupled with a 3-day power reserve. The movement beats at a frequency of 21,600 alternations/hour, it has 21 jewels and uses two spring barrels connected in series.
Panerai Radiomir 3 Days Acciaio, PAM 685 and PAM 687 will be officially unveiled in January 2017. Stay tuned for more information about these watches.
