Bulgari Octo Finissimo Tourbillon - the thinest tourbillon movement in the world

Introducing the Bulgari Octo Finissimo Tourbillon - the thinnest tourbillon movement and tourbillon timepiece in the world.

On some very rare occasions, the most fabulous news about fantastic watchmaking ventures may arrive from the places where you least expect them. Something like this has just happened with the introduction of Bulgari’s new Octo Finissimo Tourbillon, a watch that houses the world’s tiniest movement with a flying tourbillon. Bulgari unveiled its new creation at this year’s Baselworld exhibition, in April 2014, but without much fanfare. In fact, two new models in the Octo range deserve much more attention primarily because they are incredibly thin, which is something that a great number of watch connoisseurs may greatly enjoy.

Bulgari Octo Finissimo Tourbillon

Just for the record, Bulgari released its in-house produced Octo model in 2012, after Gerald Genta watches started to be marketed solely under the Bulgari brand, in 2010. The Octo model, which is designed by Gerald Genta and named after its eight-sided case, is essentially a revamped version of Gerald Genta’s Octo Bi-Retro, loaded with some of the Bulgari’s genetic material. Bulgari’s Octo range includes a simple three-hander; a Bi-Retro model with its retrograde minutes and date; Octo Grande Soniere, with grande /petite sonnerie, minute repeater, tourbillon, retrograde hours; Octo Velocissimo chronograph; and the most recent Octo Finissimo Tourbillon.

The case of Bulgari’s new Octo Finissimo Tourbillon is just 5mm thick and 40mm wide. It houses a tiny 1.95mm movement, which is built on 249 components, which operates at 3 Hz. The Octo Finissimo Tourbillon is currently the thinnest tourbillon movement and tourbillon timepiece in the world, and it has a power reserve of approximately 55 hours. To achieve such an impressive level of slenderness, Bulgari’s watchmakers had to apply a number of imaginative technical solutions to reduce the overall volume of the movement. The mechanism has two bridges, one is for the minute wheel and the other one for the gear train of the tourbillon cage, and it features seven ball bearings, as an alternative to jewels, for its moving parts. The tourbillon cage swivels on a ball-bearing mechanism, while the timing is adjusted directly on the balance wheel, thus making a regulator assembly completely unnecessary. The innovative ball-bearing solution has also enabled the length of the balance spring to be doubled up, ensuring the remarkable amount of power reserve.

This luxurious watch is made of rare platinum and its tourbillon caliber is generously finished in the spirit of true haute horlogerie. The bright shade of the case is paired with a smooth black dial, and a black alligator leather strap with a platinum buckle. Bulgari Octo Finissimo Tourbillon is priced at 30,000CHF, which is something around $150,000 USD.

The house of Bulgari has recently introduced the Monete secret watches, a trio that pays homage to the Maison’s classical Greek and Roman roots. This time, Bulgari used ancient Roman and Greek coins to recreate something contemporary with what is immortal. The medallions originate from the times of turbulence in the Roman Empire after the death of Constantine the Great, when three of his sons - Constantine II, Constans and Constantius II - co-ruled. The first Monete...

As Bulgari explains, the Lucea range establishes a direct connection between light and time via new dial colors and gem-set creations. For BaselWorld 2016, Bulgari introduces the Bulgari Serpenti Incantati, yet another version of the world’s most renowned jewelry timepiece.

The house of Bulgari was founded in 1884, by Sotirio Bulgari, a man of Greek heritage who lived in Rome. At first, his brand produced only silverware and decorative items, before it finally tapped into jewelry in 1905. The famous Serpenti bracelet, the brand's most iconic jewelry creation shaped like a snake coiled around the wrist, was first introduced during the 1940s. The Serpent collection derives its inspiration from the Greco-Roman heritage of the brand, recalling the legend of the snake from both Greek and Roman mythologies. The snake wa...
